For email, you need to have a special character to mark the difference in the title and the web address. Otherwise, they'd have to make it recognize "at," plus if the title had an 'a' and a 't' together, there would be an error. So for email's sake there has to be a curly a.

It should be "around". It makes sense: there's the 'a' and then the spiral goes AROUND it.
