If sectumsempra was a more well-known spell, it would be the fourth Unforgivable Curse, amirite?
by Anonymous14 years ago
And Snape came up with it...what's that tell you about Snape?
by Anonymous14 years ago

That is an epic character and the only character in all of the books whose death made me cry uncontrollably.

Grammar Nazi alert:

I'll explain why. Oh wait! I have a post. See here: http://www.amirite.net/283956
by Anonymous14 years ago
You already did this on another of my posts. Stop it.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Stop what, being a Grammar Nazi?
by Anonymous14 years ago
Being annoying and wrong. I already told you why you were wrong last time.
by Anonymous14 years ago
No, it isn't wrong. I don't even recall that. The subjunctive is used in cases where it's contrary to fact. This is contrary to fact as it ISN'T more well known.
If you WERE to change it, I would delete my comment.

I know it can be irritating, but if you just ignore the troll, it will go away. Just remember that the only way it wins is if you feed it, okay?

I was going to disagree with you on the grounds that it wasn't nearly as bad as the other three. I then realized, as you obviously also did, that unless someone immediately next to you has phoenix tears (yeah, right), dittany or knows how to cast Vulnera Sanentur, you're just as dead as if someone had used Avada Kedavera, only more slowly and much more painfully. Good observation.

And even then it's hard to heal, they never could completely fix Fred's ear
by Anonymous14 years ago
That was George
by Anonymous14 years ago
Nah, it's not on the same level as the other three. Still extremely bad though.
by Anonymous14 years ago
I think it's just as bad. Unless someone nearby knows how to heal it properly, you'll bleed to death slowly and painfully. It might not be the worst of the unforgiveable curses, but it's still more violent, painful and deadly than any other spells I can think of.

I've always wondered how someone can come up with spells that function the way that they want. Snape obviously said that it was his spell, but exactly how does one make a spell and have it work the way you want and how do you make it work with only using the correct chant?
by Anonymous14 years ago
If you look at the incantations, most of them sound very similar to what they actually do in the latin language. For example, Sectumsempra. Break it down. Sectum is latin for "having been cut" and the best guess for sempra I've seen is that it's derived from semper, meaning "always". The chant can then literally be imagined as the caster saying "always cutting". In other words, you're basically telling the wand what you want it to do, just in another language. How it only works with one chant, as there are many ways to say the same thing, I don't know, but there's your answer for one half of your question.
