Eh, well, as much as my inner obsessive fangirl self wants to agree with you that anime should be placed in it's own category, it is infact, just another form of animation. Yeah, if you compare anime to American cartoons, there's a huge difference, but it's still pictures shown at high speed to create the illusion of movement with sound added, so in a sense, anime is cartoon.
