+147 Why are republicans so against abortion? If they hate "big government" so much, why do they want for the government control another part of the lives of women by saying what they can and cannot do? amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh yeeeah... those types all for government interference if it keep people from doing things they don't want them to do; abortion, gay marriage, prohibition... they just want the goverment to stay out of big business' way so they can run things.

*are all *keeps I'm having difficulties multitasking today...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Republicans stand for conservative values, which abhor the destruction of a soon-to-be-born child. Personally, I'm sided with the republicans in the view that abortion SHOULD not be necessary and thus unfeasible. But with circumstances we live with today...it is very...very necessary unfortunately. :[

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Fiscal conservatism is not the same as social conservatism. May people are one but not the other.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not about the womens' rights, it's about the baby's.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So you believe that a clump of cells has more rights than a living woman trying to get by in the world?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We are all clumps of cells. Just some more cells than the others. And she can get off her lazy ass and get a job! Don't have children if you know you can't afford them!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What if you get violently raped, getting you pregnant, and having the child would result in the death of both the child and you?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

what percentage of abortions are for that and what percentage are just unwanted pregnancies? just a whisper from the wind...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(the wind): Even then, women will get abortions whether it's legal or not. Personally, I don't agree with it and I myself would never get one unless absolutely necessary, but if we make it illegal then suddenly women will be "accidentally" sitting on wire coat hangers.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Dude Just because a girl can not afford to have a child doesnt mean she doesnt have a job and is lazy. Many hard working people get prego and still cant afford it, many people that get abortions were already taking responsible measures to not get pregnant. Also maybe a girl cant carry a baby and give it away because it would affect her JOB. Did you ever think of that? I said a woman trying to get by in the world-its already hard enough to work and live on your own WITHOUT a baby.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree, but I think moderate Republicans, such as myself, just don't want to pay for other's abortions and think there should be stricter limits on the time frame for which they can have one. Because, truth is, women will do it legally or not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Cider house rules...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Republicans don't pay for it, in most states there's laws saying a clinic that receives federal funds can't perform abortions or even do abortion counselling (examples being 1989 Webster v. Reproductive Health Services and 1991 Rust v. Sullivan) Also there are strict time limits on when an abortion can be done, just look at Roe v. Wade.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

um because morals are infinitely more valuable than defiance. "oh, i want to show that i'm independent and can make my own decisions." that seems a selfish argument to make when talking about a child's life. and, hell, if you agree with government, despite what you may want in regards to it's size, i'd hope that you'd swallow your pride and do what you know is right!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Maybe the most right thing is having an abortion.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It seems like a lot of the people so passionately against abortion are also the ones against welfare. Like "you have to have that baby, but i dont think you should get food stamps to feed it"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I believe there's a difference between charity and wellfare. I'd say charity (a spirit of giving) is unrelated to governments thievery. But IF it came down to a choice between an abortion or welfare, fine take all the damn money you want, just don't murder a baby

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Its not murdering a baby.It can be done before the embryo is a fetus.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Charity is when you give your money to the poor. Welfare is when you give someone else's money to the poor.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't know what that has to do with anything but Hell yea. That's what being a Republican is all about. Taking more responsibility for our own lives, rather than letting the government take control of our lives to take control of our lives. If you know what I mean.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The Libertarian Party also believes in that as well. Hooray for fiscal conservatism!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do you know how many couples out there are UNABLE to have children? Straight and gay alike! Nobody is forcing a pregnant woman to raise up her child,I'm just asking that she give it a chance. I am grieved each day to live in a country that supports unlawful murder such as theses.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I understand that many people cant have babies, and adoption is a wonderful thing-but I am saying that NOT EVERYONE can go through with carrying a baby for 9 months just to give it away. Some people can only give up their baby if the adoptive parents covered the hospital bills. It would be a heartbreaking ordeal for the adoptive family if the girl changed her mind last minute and decided to keep the baby. Another thing, the girl could have a job that would be jeopardized if she had to have a baby (would it be worth it if she was just giving it up) If abortion was totally illegal, there would be more babies than people willing to adopt-why do you think so many people get babies from china? There are places in china where you can only have 1 or 2 children per family, orphanages are overcrowded with babies in terrible conditions over there.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We would have terrible population problems as out population is skyrocketing anyway. There would be a high population and a lower success rate, then higher poverty. Again I am totally for adoption, just not everyone can carry a baby for someone else. We would also have really big problems if every single woman that got pregnant was forced to give birth.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's why I stopped being a Republican and I joined the Libertarian Party. I want less government involvement in every way. I want more rights for businesses and individuals. The government has no right to stop me from owning guns, buying drugs, getting abortions, or marrying other women.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you very much =] I was reading through all the comments hoping someone would bring the Libertarian Party into the discussion.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's assuming that just because one votes/associates oneself with a political party, that they agree with all views of it. Most people fall somewhere in between all parties - not exclusively one side or another. That said, Libertarians are better :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Long Live Libertarians!!

Abortion is never going to go away, it's been happening for thousands of years in all diffrent cultures. The most responsible thing for a society to do is make them safe. And teach better sex education especially about contraception to try and avoid unwanted pregnancys.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The best government is that which governs the least. But that doesn't mean that we should allow murder of infants.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The best government is the one that governs the least but also controls women's bodies. That makes sense.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

if you read "freakonomics" they present a theory and some pretty strong arguements for abortion being responsible for less crime in our society

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That book is my life.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you have seen what an abortion looks like and what they do to the baby, you wouldn't support abortions either. Whether you like it or not, its still a baby you are killing. BTW, its a moral issue, not a political issue. How can you support killing babies but then not support killing known criminals. Choose your stance and keep it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've seen plenty of anti-abortion propaganda in my lifetime from pictures of mangled bodies to inaccurate to diagrams of late term abortion. Seeing pictures of babies doesn't make me want to ban abortion anymore than seeing war casualties make me a pacifist. I make choices based on reason and facts, not propaganda. The controversy about abortion is not about whether or women should get abortions, it is about who has the right to decide if a woman gets an abortion. Personally, I don't want decisions regarding health care to be made by government officials or religious interest groups but by the people whose health it involves.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's as simple as, don't have sex unless you're prepared to be able to look after a baby....

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Amen.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Or just go on the friggin pill, It works great I promise.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's stupid. Not everyone wants a baby or is able to take care of a baby. If birth control were more readily available we wouldn't have this trouble.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

because an abortion is the murder of a child that has never done anything wrong in its short little life

by Anonymous 13 years ago

they're not just looking out for the mother. they're looking out for the baby, too.
