I'm pretty photogenic, and once I showed my passport to some guy in the airport, and he was like "That's YOU?" It was so bad...

It's almost always said with a bitter tone.

I know how u feel i personally think i look better in person than pictures so when people tell me i am photogenic, i take it as "you look good in pictures than you do in person". I would rather didn't get that compliment if you choose to call it so.

I don't take it that way, I just don't like how when people say it they sound like they're fishing for compliments or want you to degrade yourself.

My friend is both. Jealousy.

It's easier and more humbling to say, "You're really photogenic," than it is to say, "You're amazingly beautiful," to a stranger.

yeah, i get told i'm really photogenic.
for exapmple, a kid from a different school in my town added me on facebook.
when i saw him in person, he was like "you look different in person"
LIKE GREAT. FUCK YOU.

I hate it when people tell me I am photogenic. To me it means they are saying I am prettier in pictures than in real like. Echoing one of the above comments, if they really thought I was beautiful, they would say that other than saying I am photogenic. In my opinion, you can't take a million gorgeous photos and be plain. It means your gorgeous and your friends are probably jealous at some level.
