Well it's not what those other people think... But the only reason I know is because last week my little sister was watching a Veggie Tales about it. And that's how I learned.
Are there really people old enough to put together a full sentence using words with more then 6 letters long who are such fuckwits or brought up by fuckwits and taught by fuckwits that they don't know WHY Christmas involves Santa? I can understand not knowing why santa wears red as thats a smal detail but not knowing WHY santa is on the fake birthday of a fake prophet that is enjoyed worldwide as an excuse to not work but get gifts; something is not right here.
I could get into discussing the Catholic church's demented logic and twisted adopting and bending of pagan traditions to indoctrinate more people into their religion, but that is kind of long and boring. Instead you should just accept that it's fucked up and move on.
or maybe you could know things.... like the fact that St. Nicholas was a real man who actually did ride in a sleigh ( obviously it didn't fly) pulled by reindeer( yes they ARE real!) and deleivered gifts to young kids on Christmas Eve.

1. I know that St. Nick is a real historical character, but he only entered the mainstream with commercialization when it started playing to tradition.
2. Of course reindeer are real...
3. No he did NOT deliver gifts to the little children. St. Nicholas helped poor families who were falling victim to Roman taxes.

Actually Totobean has a point. When the imprints of Christ diffused, the Romans already celebrated the winter because it was a critical time period for them. They already decorated and everything so Jesus gave them another reason to celebrate. So that's where they got the church into this.

He put small gifts in the childrens stockings that were hanging to dry by the fire, hence the tradition of hanging stockings.
