+727 You find WAY more atheists on the Internet than in real life, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Seriously. I've only met one other atheist in real life that I know of.

Yes, but due to a lot of reasons. First, many small churchs/religious communities - can't think of specific example - are somewhat Amish-like and don't use the modern technology. Second, older generations are more likely to be religious than younger ones, and old people are more likely to either not use the Internet, or not go onto social networking sites - that is, they only use the Internet for talking to close family/friends, and cooking recipes/sports scores and such. And, I'm basing this on the assumption that most people here are American - there tends to be more atheist people in Europe and Asian than in US/UK/Australia, and Africa/Middle East. Also, religion is more private and personal in most other countries than in the US.

good points, but even out of all of the young people i know, i've only met two atheists my entire life. that i know of, at least. I'm thinking a lot of people are closet atheists. For some strange reason, it's easier to be open on the internet, so people find it easier to admit. Not saying it's something people should be ashamed of or anything, but I think that's young atheists might feel.

"For some strange reason, it's easier to be open on the internet" Anonymity, not very strange.

Yes, it might be a community thing as well. Where you live, are people likely to be ostracised or treated differently for admitting they don't believe in a God? Most people I know are atheist, but I do live in a large city.

^^That, pretty much. All I came to say was that it depends on where you live. Bible-belt/small town US- open atheism is pretty rare. Most other places- not so much really. There's probably way more than you know, who just don't say anything to avoid all the judgemental bs from religious people.

not here in the netherlands. almost everybody i know. except my grandparents are atheist

Like homosexuals, right? There are many closet Atheists who are open and honest here. I would never reveal being an Atheist in my community.

Luckily I live in Massachusetts and people here are pretty much accepting of all beliefs. I go to a Catholic college and I know a lot of my classmates are Atheists too. Where are you from?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think it is because there are WAAAAY more people on the internet than people I personally know...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This isn't true for me, but that's probably because I go to a liberal college where the majority of people are atheists.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Being an atheist is more accepted on the internet. Most everyone I know is Catholic.

Lol this post has turned into an Atheist support group.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I only know, like, three that I can think of. Fuckin' atheist man. I hate two out of three of those people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's probably because most atheists will admit they're atheist in the real world while it's easier to come out on the internet. You've probably met many atheists in real life, just most of them are still in the closet.

I can't say I know any 'hard atheists', but no one I know is really religious, either. Strange, because I went to a Christian school, so most of our family friends are related to that somehow.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I went to a catholic school, and a lot of the people there were atheists
