I'm pretty sure they are doing that for the kid. I mean its usually to help the kid feel better, feel like he has fans, and is being a crucial part of the team. I find it hard to believe that so many parents actually believe their kid is a sterling god descended from sports heaven that has come to lead his team into the promised land(i.e. the playoffs).
