+461 It's stupid how some schools allow kids who are disabled automatically be on a team simply because they are disabled and they pity them. Yes, it's nice for them to have a chance to play, but it's wrong to give them special treatment when somebody who may have more skill could have their spot and play, especially since many coaches sit the disabled out. amirite?

Yeah but imagine if the disabled kid didn't get to be in the team. The parents would be complaining and call the coach unfair. Ex: "YOU DIDN'T PUT HIM/HER ON THE TEAM BECAUSE THEY ARE DISABLED!! HOW DARE YOU!" It's pretty much a lose-lose situation.

The school could handle it with the whole "not enoughskill" thing. Honestly parents of disabled kids shouldnt use the "cause he's disabled" card because they should KNOW that their kid isn't going to be good. It's a competitive team.

Exactly.

I don't think disabled people should be treated any different than people who aren't disabled. I know if I was disabled, I'd want to be treated like everyone else, otherwise I'd feel bad about myself. As long as people don't single them out just for that reason, there shouldn't be a problem with it.

Rejection is a part of being treated fairly.

Have you ever had a kid in your class with down syndrome?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no, they go to special Ed in my district but I am related to one.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, I have a girl Alex n my class. And she goes to almost all my classes like a normal kid. We treat her normal and yeah, she gets to do things just because she is handicapped. But why is that so bad?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think it's unfair for them to get special treatment. They want acceptance, yes? Treat them like everyone else. Don't up their chances to get on a team because of their handicap an because you feel bad.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Alex is only on the team because she can't really play.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

just because he's disable doesn't mean he's bad at something. i have a friend with autism that was voted the most improved runner of his cross country team. on his sophomore year, he could run a 20 flat 5k.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I never said they were bad.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

they meant physically I think, not mentally.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This will probably sound mean, but I would admire a disabled person who would get over their power trip and just realize that they're disabled, they aren't good at some things, and they shouldn't go crazy because someone won't let them do something. That probably made little to no sense. Sorry.

if the person had so much talent, they would have made the cut. a disabled person would be on a string that would hardly play anyway

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i mean, if youre looking at it from the view that the point of a team is to win at games, then yeah youre right. but if you take the view that a team is there to build skills, confidence, muscles, and character (to an extent) then i think youre way off.

Typically high school teams take GOOD players to make them better. Not bad players to make them good.

What *I* really hate is how people EXPECT kids with disabilities to be on teams. I have a service dog, and I can't tell you how much crap I get for not "getting involved with the community." It's a lose-lose situation for everyone.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That sucks man. If you don't mind me asking, why do you have a service dog? If it's not too personal anyways.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not a common reason, so I usually leave that question alone so I don't have to explain what's wrong with me.
