+416 If we didn't have contractions like "Don't, they're, haven't, it's, wasn't ect" and actually said "Do not, they are have not ect", we would sound just a little bit smarter. amirite?

I dunno, did you think Data sounded smart or awkward? I'm guessing a little bit of both... well assuming you watched any Star Trek: TNG(sorry, I'm a geek). Anyway, there are also contractions for things that would sound weird said seperately, although I can't think of any atm =/ I remember thinking about it before though. Haha just proved my username didn't I... I'm spaced out LOL

cool story bro

It also makes an essay longer to switch all contractions into the real words.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In an essay, you should never have contractions in the first place.

ET CETERA, "ect"??? Jesus.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sorry, but... wtf is an 'ect''?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

ET CETERA!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Are you joking?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We would look smarter if we used commas...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nah, I'd say we'd look either angry or slightly illiterate if we didn't have contractions.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I see what point you’re making, but if it was a normal thing to say the words separately it wouldn’t sound like that. Hm, I’m finding my use of contractions a bit ironic.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I guess that's sort of the point of contractions. You can use the seperate words when you want to make a point. They have more impact since they're used more scarcely.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, that makes sense too. I guess it’s just a matter of whether you’re speaking formally or casually.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think we would look more intelligent if we used commas and punctuation after bad abbreviations.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Certain words would sound weird, would not you say?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

it sounds okay if you put "would you not say?" in stead of "would not you say?"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And this my friends is why you do not use contractions in university or job interviews.. Unless you're applying to McDonalds in which case, don't bother.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

don't you? Do not you? i dont know about you nut Do not you is just bad grammar
