Boys grow up liking trucks, fighting, non-girly colours, and don't care how they look. Girls grow up liking barbies, pink and purple, tea parties, and think boys are all stupid. Don't try to change this. "Gender-neutrality" in childhood is just bad in the sense that kids should just do what they desire. Men and women have different interests and roles. Please do not try to change this, amirite?
I'll admit you have worded this very well but essentially what your saying is don't fight the system, woman belong in the kitchen and men should go out and make the money, and that's just not right.
I disagree. Now, I may be wrong and the OP may, in fact, be slightly sexist. However, to me it sounds like his point is that boys should be boys and girls should be girls, and they should know, but displayed in extremely poor wording. The gender-neutrality has gone so far as to even allow the child to choose what he or she wants to be once she can. It gets ridiculous at a certain point. But if a boy wants to play with barbies, but is still a boy, that's no problem. But in certain cases the boy will want to play with barbies and this gender-neutrality movement will proceed to tell him he can be a girl if he wants, which he may well, because he's playing with barbies.
Then again, I could be wrong.
No offense to anyone, but fuck that, Im gonna watch My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic and society can go fuck itself.
Oh my Sparkles. Let's be bronies. :o
Are you a brony too? :)
Yess, I'm a brony.
Fluttershy is sooooooooo adorable :D
I Rainbowdash forever
Rainbow dash is pretty cool too. I have to admit, the only one I don't like is Rarity.
Just ask them what they want. Some boys want dolls, some girls want cars - just let them make their own decisions.
Parents are there to help children make the correct decisions. If we all made our own as children, we would got nowhere in life.
Yes, but we're talking about goddamn toys here.
I know, but that effects them a lot. PLus it's just one detail.
@1011837 (Straight_Pride): So you're saying that if your daughter says "ii want this toy car" you sidle say "no. Play with this barbie." ? That's ridiculous.
Honestly what I dont understand is how forcing a boy who is wanting to play with a doll to play with a car is the correct decision. They are just a child and should be allowed to play with whatever the hell they want.
My mom gave me a gender-neutral childhood in the sense of she bought me a toy if it was reasonably-priced, not just if it was a "girl toy". Doing otherwise just doesn't make sense to me. When your son asks for a Barbie doll, can you honestly think that what's between his legs should be the deciding factor of whether or not he gets it?
Although I agree with this, I have to point out that girls tend to be all right with being tomboy-ish or playing with boys' things, but most boys who are drawn to girlish things and Barbies from a young age (while I think it's perfectly okay to let them do whatever they want, and play with that if they choose to) can tend to have a hormonal imbalance or a psychological factor that makes them more likely to be gay. It's not a fact, but it's a bit like this:
Not all boys who played with girls things in their youth are gay BUT
Most boys who are gay have been known to show an interest in girls' things.
And don't vote this down as a homophobe thing... I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I'm just stating an observation I've noticed in experience and books and stuff...
I know that you aren't being homophobic and just stating a fact but... when I was little I liked playing with dolls and loved Cinderella/other Disney princesses, I'm a boy and I'm not gay. I don't think that the toys we play with or the things we like define how we turn out. It's up to the parents and role models to determine what we'll turn out to be. Oh... and I'd just like to say that I'm not homophobic in any way. Love is love f**k hate
Now responding to original post: Kids won't turn out screwy if we let them play with things that go against society's pre-determined gender characteristics. Do you really think that if a little boy plays with a barbie that when he's a teenager he's going to be confused whether or not he's a boy? If society didn't have all these gender based rules or whatever you want to call them, then it wouldn't matter what children played with.
Yeah, that's fair enough. Like I said, it doesn't go for everyone. Just a majority thing I've noticed for most gay people. It's actually a bit unfair. Girls don't get as much grief when they play with boys' things.
Sir, people in the year 999 did not have cars, and I'm sure they didn't have any wallpaper either. What if your child does not like cars? What's wrong with you?
Err. You couldn't be more wrong. Things change. Pink/Red used to be worn by boys until the 20th century. Blue is actually for girls.
Let people who they want to be.
"- Have you had any sex that was voluntary?
I can't tell if you mean this as "don't try to change what individual little kids want to do" or "don't encourage crossing gender lines even a little".
I mean encourage boys to be boyish and girls to be girlish.
Oh, then I disagree.
And you encourage women to cook your food barefoot while they are pregnant.
well my mom never let me wear shoes in the house and the food isn't gonna cook itself
Shouldn't you just encourage them to play with any toy they want? There is no harm with a girl playing with a truck, or playing bull rush.
You should only be concerned about gender identity if they consantly tell you they are the other gender, and geniunly are troubled.
Just do anything for your child so they are happy and good children. Isn't that all that counts?
... When I was little my room was train themed. I had dolls, but I didn't play house with them, I had them fight each other. I was much more interested in playing Dead or Alive and Halo than having tea parties. I grew up just fine.
Don't force your kids to fit into the stereotypical gender roles. But don't try to force them to not fit into those gender roles either. Let them be who they want to be.
I agree. I grew up playing with my older brother and using his toy trucks and playing pokemon. I completely ignored my dolls that my mom bought me. I'd like to believe that I turned out fairly decent. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to play some video games once in a while. I just beat halo 3 with my brother the other day, it was some good bonding time.
OP, you're a sexist and homophobic idiot, from the sounds of things.
I only have one point, since I'm all too aware there could be no such thing as reasoning with you. "Gender neutrality" does not, in fact, mean pushing 'girly' things on boys or forcing the 'opposite' role on children; it means not enforcing strict gender roles such as assuming that everything a little boy plays with OMGhastobeMANLY. If a little boy wants to paint his nails or a girl wants to race cars and the parent has no problem with that, that is gender neatrality.
There's nothing wrong with letting kids play with toys meant for the other gender. The kid won't grow up wrong. I never played with barbies, and I turned out just fine.
Are you sure about that?
.. I keed! kinda
Eh, I think I'm fine. Other people don't, but I do.
Are these "people" dressed in gowns, carrying clipboards?
Why, yes they are.
I grew up in a neighborhood where I was one of the only girls my age. So I played Beyblades and Pokemon cards and cars and skateboarding all during my childhood. I turned out perfectly fine, and I'm fairly certain no one is confused as to my gender.
inb4 I'm in the kitchen in my picture...
I hardly ever played with dolls as a kid - I was outside playing baseball, tag football, basketball, and games my friend and I thought up. I never wore pink, climbed trees and reckless abandon, loved Pokemon and video games, and could wrestle my older brother to the ground in seconds. My gender was never compromised, I'm still a female, I still like guys, and I'm still more rough and tumble than frilly and girly - and guess what, it's okay - forget the outdated rules of gender - let kids be who they want to be. Toys don't change a child's gender, or gender preference.
Gender preference? What the hell is wrong with you?!? You sick bitch!
Yes, gender preference - not everyone is straight. Who someone loves is whom they love - that is the way that the person is, and it is not our job to change that facet of their personality.
I guess since everyone else is sharing what they played with as children, I will too! I spent hours playing with Barbies and Polly Pockets because that's what my older sister wanted to do, and I just wanted to do whatever my sister did. I probably played more with those Barbies than I did with my GI Joes, and you know what, it was damn fun! I'm pretty sure I turned out just fine.
When I was little, I used to put my dinosaur toys in strollers and feed them baby bottles. Is that bad?
No. Baby dinosaurs need to be taken care of too.
WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH!
I'm a girl and I grew up with Barbies, but I also played with trucks and dinosaurs... I played in the sand while all the other girls played with their hair. Look at me now.. I'm not a lesbian, I'm not confused.. I have a boyfriend,I'm not a girly girl but I know I'm a girl. So shut your freaking face.
I hung out with a few girls when growing up. None of them acted like that.
I've never known a kid who followed the "rules" about what "should and shouldn't be played with," and they've all been fine. It really doesn't matter what the kid wants to play with. They're just toys. My 7yo nephew plays with baby dolls, tea sets and fairies/princesses - as well as more "boyish" toys. My 5yo niece plays with hot wheels, nerf guns and pirates/knights - and "girly" things. It doesn't make a difference. It's not like it'll "turn them gay" or anything - you (obviously) can't control that kind of thing with toys.
When I was young I used to play with my brother, who's 4 years older than me, with barbies and action figures. It was like roleplaying, each doll had a name and we used to talk through them and stuff. I usually played with the barbies and Bratz while he played with the action figures and wrestlers, but sometimes we switched and I'd be the one playing through the action figures.... Wait, what was my point again? D:
ACTUALLY scientists have done a study on infants and found that when infants are first born there is literally NO difference between a guy's brain and a girl's brain and the differences only started occurring when people put societal norms into their heads. Think about it. People tend to treat boy babies and girl babies differently so of course they'll end up different. If you just let kids be, you would find that they would just play with what they want, not their "gender specific" toys. I find it disturbing the number of people who agreed with this.
If that were actually true, there would be no such thing as transgendered people. Male and female brains are different.
Yes in some ways and others but there are women out there who aren't transgender and their brains are more male and vice versa. However I think we might see a difference in the difference between a male and female brain if we didn't put so much on societal norms. That's my theory people have yet to test it out.
When I grew up I played with barbie dolls for a little bit, then I started playing with Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh! cards. Then I went on to play video games.
I turned out fine.
Hmmm... I think that children should be allowed to play with what ever they want and shouldn't be forced into any role that is thought to be the norm. People shouldn't be forced to be more masculine or feminine than they are, but that doesn't mean that girls can't be girly and feminine and boys can't be ultra masculine. Everyone is different. So when you get rid of any gender identity and disallow girls to play with barbies and boys to play with trucks, that can be just a detrimental as putting a boy in a dress or a girl in a suit because you wanted them to be the opposite sex.
There has to be the freedom to choose. Support children in being the person they want (unless that involves something unhealthy or bad like being selfish or antisocial).
When I was small, I loved dolls. I forced my male friends to play dollies and house with me. It was awesome, and they turned out to all be football psychos XD It was hilarious.
Where you really fucked up is "Men and Women have different roles". While this may not be the case historically, the role that men and women have are indistinguishable.
What the hell...go die in a hole. Oh, and don't forget to fuck yourself. Men and women are different. You people need to accept and embrace this fact.
I love how Jesus Christ just confessed to looking at Barbie's boobs. Nice.
Kids should be able to play with what they want. I'm sure the majority of girls went through a "tom-boy" stage once, and if a boy wants a barbie let him have one. But if a parent is trying to force something onto their child it's wrong. Whether it be forcing a girl to be "girly", or even now some parents are forcing boys to be "girly" and vice-versa, it's wrong to force something like that onto a child.
A kid can do whatever the hell he/she pleases regardless of gender role. Society can't force them to change and neither can the parents. Screw gender roles, they hardly matter anymore.
I hope you never reproduce
I hated pink, NEVER had a tea party, and used all of my barbie heads as ammo to slingshot at the annoying neighbor boy. However, I never cared about my looks, loved blue and brown, and always fought with my brother. I think I turned out just fine.
What I found funny about this is that I was listening to Darren Criss singing "The Coolest Girl" as I read this post.
I agreed with this at first because I read about that gender neutral baby. I think it's wrong to encourage kids to try hobbies that are generally for the opposite sex, but if a boy wants to play with barbies or insists on trying on a skirt, I'd have no problem with that. And the username "straight pride" just pisses me off. It's not a fucking CHOICE -- you can't help who you're attracted to.
It's a choice. My God, can't you think of some other more interesting (and still unjustifiable) reason for faggots and dykes to exist?
Can't tell if trolling or just stupid. I'm guessing by your level of jackassery you're a troll, but since you asked nicely I'll explain it to you. And since you appear to have the attention span of a 5 year old and need things to be "interesting," I'll try to explain it in an entertaining way! :) Okay so pretend we have a stuck up, cocky douchebag who conforms to society. Oh wait -- you are one! Okay this works out great. So you like boobs right? You're simply attracted to them. It's really not that difficult to understand. You can't force yourself to be attracted to cow nipples (though I wouldn't be surprised if you did). Well gays simply like the same sex. They can't force themselves to be attracted to the other. Do you understand now? If you read this whole paragraph, I congratulate you!! And here's another perfectly justifiable reason for "faggots" and "dykes" to exist: no one gives twoshit about some stuck up jackass's opinion of them. Seriously. No one gives a fuck about what you think and people will do whatever they want, regardless of your opinion.
My god, can't you think of some other more closeminded, offensive things to say? You're gonna get beat up if you walk
around saying shit like that.
As a reward for reading that WHOLE thing (you're making a lot of progress. I'm so proud of you!), here is a funny video to keep you entertained.
Conforms to society? Have you seen how much society is pushing this gay garbage?
yahh i agree with agent_eclare.
Troll in the dungeon.
Gender neutrality is the definition of letting children play as they desire. What's wrong with you?
I think what OP mean't was to let them be and not give them different toys or whatever just because it's politically correct that they should be able to.
its funny because your user name is strait pride. It's also funny because if it was programmed in us to have such totally different intrests between males and females there would be no such movement as gender neutrality.
It's not sexism to think that it's okay to have set gender roles in society. In nature male and female animals both have set roles that they've followed since the beginning of time. We're animals too, that's just how it works.
We're animals, so we should eat our food raw and shit outside. No, just because we are similar to them doesnt mean we have to act like them.
It may not be sexism, but it's not right to say that boys must be one way and girls must be another. Just because the majority of people are like that doesn't mean it's wrong or bad to deviate from the norm.
What's up with everyone pushing for boys and girls to be treated the same way? Why does it matter if men a women have differnt roles in society? The mans role might be considered more important, but that should not be the case. Men and womens roles should be recognized as being equally important.
I think everyone should find their own role. I'm not saying that we should switch people around and have women wear the pants and men in the kitchen. I just think that if a man wants to be a stay at home dad he should be able to without being looked down upon and a woman should be able to be ambitious and put food on the table if she wants. There shouldn't be specific roles for each.
I agree, but I'm saying that nothing should be pushed for with children that encourages them to be the other gender-like. Get young boys car wallpaper, don't make them all girly. I just don't want a generation of kids growing up all screwy.
"Boyish" and "girly" are completely made up terms.
I get what your saying. Kids have impressionable minds and women and men are two different genders and should be brought up according to who they are. Though, I also think that if a man wants to stay at home with the kids and a women wants to put on the suit and heels than by all means.
I think what you mean is don't encourage your son to be girly by forcing them to play with dolls etc.
But what if your son was playing with dolls volunteraly? I think that is what people are confused about.
Well, no. I tried to make this as not harsh as possible, but if you know what I mean, thanks for understanding. My main point is that blurring the line between genders, especially during childhood, is very bad.
No. It's not bad. Let girls run around and play with toy cars and let boys make things in their easy bake ovens. There is absolutely no harm in letting children play what they want even when it doesn't fit society's outdated gender roles.
I liked to dress like a boy when I was a kid. I even had short hair. I liked all the boy toys, and hated pink. Does that mean my childhood is somewhat messed up? Or that I have gender issues? Because I'm pretty sure I turned out fine...
We're not in the year 999...
And I'm talking small boy. He will like cars, I guarantee it. And if not, then ask him what he likes, just don't feed him girly things.
I couldn't agree more. ATTENTION PEOPLE: Make-up, dolls, glitter, and stuffed animals do NOT supply proper nutrition for a growing boy.
Then I was raised the wrong way....
True, but do not encourage behaviours of the opposite sex. Too many people do that, and then the kids grow up all confused. It's wrong and should be considered child abuse.
You are an excellent troll, the best I've seen today.
1. You don't use the reply button, annoying everyone trying to read the thread.
2. Your post is inflammatory.
3. You continue debating, even though multiple people have stated that you're overreacting and/ or wrong.
Overall, I give you an A+. Nice work!
Children should do whatever they want. It doesn't matter what type of toys they play with. And if they want to grow up to be someone that their gender wasn't originally born to do, parents should encourage them to do whatever they chose and support them either way
