+155 Maybe people have bad eyesight so that their other senses can become more powerful and evolve but we are preventing it with glasses, amirite?

That's not quite how evolution works. This is something we'd evolve by with choice. In the future, there will still be 20/20 visioners and glasses wearers, because the public doesn't dislike 20/20 visioners, nor do they like glasses wearers. In order to completely rid of some sort of physical trait, the general public needs to REALLY dislike that trait. Then they won't reproduce with people with that trait. And that gene will cease.

I don't think the poster is referring to evolution of species here. I think all they meant to say that our bodies are (potentially) designed to improve our other senses as our sight deteriorates.

No, no, he said evolving and used it in that form. And that's not the case. If anything, we'd be evolving to better eyes, because humans have wonderfully advanced eyes in the first place. We can make out colors and see more clearly than other animals can (so long as your vision is 20/20). In the survival days, bad eyes would have caused you to be unable to see predators as clearly (this is why a lot of animals have fur/scales/etc. that blend in with their surroundings) and would result in you being mauled, which leaves the 20/20 visioners to reproduce. Having just "bad eyes" doesn't really emphasize other senses, anyways. You only adapt to what you need to adapt to. If you can see where you're going, you have no need to improve your hearing or smell. Especially today, where we don't really need a lot of emphasized senses in the first place because everything is handed to us. We have no need for survival skills anymore so everything is just based off of beauty now, unfortunately.

Other senses can be emphasized; theres a teacher at my school who has one lazy eye, and even though shes over thirty she can still hear the mosquito noise that no other adult in the school is able to hear. Hear hearing is over developed to compensate

The mosquito noise thing depends on the person. That doesn't really prove anything. Though a lazy eye would make sense for her other senses to improve, it wouldn't be improved that much if she could still see. The body has to sense that she can't see well in order to change other senses over time.

People with poor eyesight don't get heightened other senses unless they're completely blind, they get migraines and hit by cars, I'm not sure how you figure evolution to work but someone with poor eyesight is not the next step up.

Glasses actually are bad for your eyes if you wear them too much.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Surely not wearing them is worse if you need them?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's a myth. Glasses aren't bad for you, All they are doing is refracting light.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you wear glasses that are beyond your prescription, it may be bad though.

They might pay attention to other senses, but the sense themselves would be within normal deviation.
