+347 When I quit my job I have to give a 2 weeks notice but when a corporation fires you they don't give you a 2 week advance to start looking for a new job and prepare. The game is rigged. amirite?

How old are you? :-/ The law states that either a) you get fired on the spot with severance pay i.e. enough money to last until you find another job; or b) you get two weeks notice and no severance pay. This should be common knowledge to anyone of working age.

The law varies by state and or country. I've never heard of that...but here's some disturbing stuff: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/article-30022.html

USA law says any at will employer (which is like 99% of all employers) can fire any associate for any reason (banning any lawful discrimination reasons) and don't have to give a word of notice to the employee

I've always said this!

Yes, but imagine if you had two weeks left, you wouldn't do any work! I know I wouldnt, I'd be like screwing shit up on purpose

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I wouldn't. When my future employer call them, I don't want them to say I always screw shit up.

Like person above me said if you get fired and still have to work for 2 weeks you wouldn't do a quality job and giving your employer a two week notice isn't necessary unless you want to leave on good terms.

It depends on the job your quitting (as well as where you live, as mentioned above). In the engineering world, as well as the medical, law and finance fields, 2 weeks notice is needed if your going to quit, but the employer will need to give you a severance package. But I can't see that really being applicable in a more menial job (ex. fast food or low-end retail stores).
