It's ironic that the phrase "That's the understatement of the year!" is a hyperbole, amirite?

But it isn't saying "THIS is the understatement" it's saying that about something else.
It's not ironic to have said "[Rock group] is underrated" from the lips of an overrated rock group.
Just because the two terms "understatement" and "hyperbole" happen to accidentally be opposites, does not make this ironic.
