+389 Super volcanos are fucking scary... like the one under Yellowstone that is due to erupt any year now, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually, the one in Yellowstone supposedly isn't due for another eruption anytime in the near future.

Explosions of this magnitude "happen about every 600,000 years at Yellowstone," says Chuck Wicks of the U.S. Geological Survey, who has studied the possibilities in separate work. "And it's been about 620,000 years since the last super explosive eruption there."

...Perhaps we are screwed, but for now I'll just sit here in disbelief so that I don't spend the next few years of my life shitting bricks every where and freaking out about it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

hahahahaha same. I just ignore it and live in bliss ignorance

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just wondering (excuse me if this is a stupid question) but how would geologists know that Yellowstone apparently erupted 600,000 years ago since there was no one around back then to keep track of time? How do they know that it wasn't less than 600,000 years ago, or possibly way more?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i have no idea, im guessing they can tell from the layers of the earth and how and when it was affected by all the ash and climate change and all that

When a volcano such as Yellowstone erupts, it obviously makes massive, noticeable changes in the environment. Scientists look for these and can figure out when they happened by looking at the rocks and stuff. Yellowstone erupted about 1.8 million years ago, about 1.2 million years ago, and a little over 600000 years ago.

carbon dating

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah but it takes centuries for it to "warm up", and it's showing no signs of activity now

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that sounded kinky.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lol yes it did

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No they say the ground swells up a lot when it's due to erupt and i think i read the gorund level has been slowly rising for about a hundred years or so

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that those are just normal fluctuations. There's been no smake, no significant quakes etc.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I mean don't take my word for it, i haven't really researched them or anything.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yellowstone isn't due to erupt, Yellowstone is set to erupt every 600 000, but there is a variance of about 100 000 years and it shows no signs of explosion, just to put it in perspective the last yellowstone eruption was 640 000yrs ago.

Lets say the super volcanoes in Yellowstone were to erupt. How far from there would they do damage?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

all of Canada and some of USA would be covered in ash, North America would be basically destroyed and the whole world would enter an ice age. there are about 8 other known super volcanoes at various points in the world.

Source?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano this should cover it but i learned most of it off my grade nine science course and a documentary i forget the name to.

I think this picture more accurately describes the ash fallout. http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2005/3024/images/fs2005-3024_fig_12.jpg It shows all the Yellowstone eruptions and their fallout. I doubt North America would be completely destroyed, also. Crippled, yes, but not destroyed. Ice age seems a bit dramatic, also. A decrease in global temperature seems more likely, but not an ice age. I'm probably nitpicking now, but whatever.

Thats it. Im moving to New Zealand.

They have geologists monitor the Yellowstone area constantly. Earthquakes are recorded and are usually very small. Large magnitude earthquakes are usually a sign of volcanic activity, so we have fair warning before it erupts. I used to live like two hours away from Yellowstone, and my family and I went there usually twice a year, and the park itself offers a lot of information.
