+269 School dress codes are a good idea, but sometimes they get a little too strict with what you can and cannot wear, amirite?

I completely agree. I think they're being way too picky when they tell us we can't wear things like yoga pants, sweatpants, and leggings.

you can't wear sweatpants!? That's idiotic. For us it's length of girls' shorts. They have to be fingertip length, no exceptions, which is dumb, because some girls have long arms and short legs and have to wear bermudas or longer ALL THE TIME. Or it's the other way around and they walk around with their butt hanging out and get away with it. So may people have said to just standardize it to mid-thigh and be done with it.

yeah it's so dumb. Luckily not all the teachers have cracked down on it. MID THIGH!! We only get 3 inches above the knee! :( It's not like I wear skimpy clothes or anything but a lot of skirts are at least 4-5 inches above the knee and shorts can go even higher.

At my old high school we weren't allowed to wear shorts. We had to wear pants at least ankle length all year round and our shirts all had to have sleeves. This was pretty horrible considering that I live in Florida and for at least half of the school year it's 80+ and it's brutal when you have to eat outside.

In middle school, we were only allowed to wear black socks. The teachers and administrators would actually go around and pull up people's pant legs to check. It was so ridiculous.

I'm always surprised at how girls wear the sluttiest clothes and get away with it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

At my school, only the popular girls get away with it because the teachers know they're a lost cause.

At my school we have a navy blue pencil skirt that we have to wear with either a white polo shirt that has the school logo on, or a blue blouse that has the schools logo. We have to wear under the knee navy socks with black leather lace up shoes. Our hair has to be tied up if it's longer than the shoulders. No jewellery, no make up, no nail polish. Hair can only be one colour, a natural colour too. It's so excessive. It's not even a private school.

What about people with natural highlights? I have a brunette friends with natural blonde highlights.

One word: Uniforms.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school uniform was a kilt and shirt. WE AREN'T EVEN SCOTTISH. And in college we weren't allowed to wear shorts, or clothing with "designer frays". Our skirts could be as short as we liked though.

My school the girls can wears skirts, but not 6 inches above the knee. Tank tops have to be two fingers thick, and no hats. I wore a hat to school, and 3 seconds inside the building, I was yelled at.

My school was crazy about tucking in shirts. It sounds fair enough, until you take into account the poor design of the shirt. They were always too long, so they bunched up in your pants/skirt and under your sweater, so they were very uncomfortable and made you look less neat than wearing your sweater over an untucked shirt, as it lay nice and smooth and you couldn't see the bottom of the shirt anyway, due to the length of the sweater. They also cracked down really hard on hair colour and style, and even when some students looked perfectly neat and decent, they still got put in isolation because their hair was too short, or it was a little too far from their natural hair colour. We weren't even allowed coloured Alice bands. Interestingly, we were allowed whatever bag we liked, so you had impeccably dressed kids wandering round trying to carry several heavy books, a pencil case, lunch and a drink, in a pathetic little shoulder-bag. In about 10 years, the Chiropractors in my area are going to have a lot of business. Is this a completely illogical system, or am I just bonkers?

Well what are they supposed to do if their hair is too short? It's not like they can just make it grow.

At school, we're not allowed to wear shower caps. The fact that people even wore these to school in the first place astounds me.

I was really bored and reading the school handbook one day, and it said in the dress code that pants aren't allowed to fit below the waist. I was laughing for a looong time. Definitely one of the more outdated rules.
