But generally it will get exchanged because your dollar bill is not the same currency on the other side of the globe :)

Not necessarily. Travelling with it doesn't mean you're spending it. For example you could go visit family on the other side of the world and take some of your own currency with you to use when you get back, or to show people there the money you use. Or you could just send it as a keepsake. Most people find foreign currencies quite interesting. I remember my friend went to visit family in London once and brought back a few coins for me in South Africa.
