In those days, women no doubt envied men their power & social status, hence wishing they were men. However, Freud’s hypothesis was founded at a time in history before the clitoris was even acknowledged. When it’s anatomy was studied & it’s function became apparent, the notion of penis envy became ridiculous. Freud might actually have proposed a completely different theory; one that would have been difficult to criticise. Clitoris envy. Adolescent boys are so obsessed with their own genitals, & the limited pleasure they glean from them, they dismiss the clitoris as a smaller version of their penis, giving a girl less pleasure than they themselves experience. Once they enter into a long-term heterosexual relationship, you can be quite certain that they all suffer with clitoris envy. Luckily for us, men get a huge amount of satisfaction from pleasuring a woman, compensating them somewhat for their own rather limited orgasmic experience.
