+204 Part of the reason Americans are fat is because fatness has become socially exceptable. (weather or not you agree with the ethics) If we were to shun fat people, not include them in social gatherings, and make fun of their size whenever we saw them on the street our fat population would disappear after a while. amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes! Except that would be buwying, and buwying is wrong because buwying hurts other peoples feewings, so then you have to apowogize. :'( (not)

Who are you, Borat? "NOOTTT!"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I actually don't think so. I think that would push a great deal to eat MORE, as that's their response to depression (why they're fat in the first place). Plus, this would also serve to further the damage that body image issues already do to people of healthy weights. If they see overweight people getting shunned, they'll start freaking out more about their own weight, whether they're of a healthy weight or not, increasing bulimia, anorexia and depression nationwide. So, this plan sucks ethically and logically.

Your statement is correct, but I don't agree with the principle.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's true, but it's not something we'll be doing anytime in the near future because it's flat out rude. It's essentially like saying the best way to cure AIDS would be to kill everyone with AIDS and then it'd be gone. It WOULD work, but we're not going to do that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

aids is a disease, fatness isn't

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's the same principle though, although your post is correct.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Of course our fat population would disappear after a while! We shunned them! It's not like they're gonna stay!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sure there'd be less fat people, but there'd also be more anorexic/bulimic people, which I don't think is a great trade off.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that is so fucking mean. it's not like fat people aren't already made fun of, and if you aren't trolling and you actually believe that cruelty will encourage people to lose weight then you are sick. you're right, though, the fat population would decrease. meanwhile suicide rates would rise.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And yet you disagree with the post?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well yeah..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I disagree that increased acceptance of fat people is increasing prevalence of overweight.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Umm. Last time I checked, overweight people ARE ostricized, made fun of, and excluded from events because of their appearance. Just because there are more of them doesn't mean that their lives are any easier.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Which would also increase our depression and suicide rates... But sure, we should go for it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What an intriguing concept. Instead of constantly trying to accommodate them, we could motivate them to lead healthier lives. Unfortunately, it takes a real slap in the face to get the point across; a gentle nudge in the right direction just doesn't cut it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You make a very valid point. It takes more than a nudge for someone to change their habits. Instead of ostracizing the obese as the OP stated, I believe that eliminating accomodations for the obese (especially under government programs) is the way to go. The majority of the time a person is fat due to a lack of self control, and I have no pity for them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wow, I don't even know what to say, that's to disrespectful. You could say that same thing about any other habit you don't find "acceptable" and people would be outraged. I would say encouragement to change is a way better idea. Give people alternatives other then food to turn to. It's attitudes like that, that make people over eat out of sadness. Unbelievable...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're a dick.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not like fat people don't have the option to go for a run, or to eat healthier, they're just lazy. I agree we should take out accommodations for them, it would save money, and make the less fat, improving our reputation.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why in the world would you discriminate against fat people?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And the people who don't really have a choice (certain diseases, medications, etc) just have to suffer?
