+415 If you went back in time to kill your grandfather so that you don't exist...who will go back in time to kill your grandfather, amirite?

Mindfuck!

Gotta love a good paradox.

Time is like a tree. Every decision we make creates a new branch. When we change something in the past, we split a branch into two. In one side of the branch is the world as we know it. In the other, is the ulterior universe in which the changes we made have taken their toll. In this case, we would not exist in the ulterior universe.

Hence why if you go back in time to kill your grandfather, you will FAIL every single time. So a way to think about time travel is to think of the impossibility to change the present based on the fundamental premise that what exists today is meant to exist today. I.E my mother is alive today. If I were to go back in time to try to kill her for whatever reason, no matter what I do, the universe will prevent it.

Which is why time travel to the past is 100% completely fucking impossible and never going to happen.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This is called the grandfather paradox. There's a whole wikipedia page dedicated to the possibilities. After reading that I was thoroughly convinced time travel is impossible.

Traveling to the past is impossible, but traveling to the future is still up for debate

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't know. How can we travel to the future if it hasn't happened yet?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, one of the current theories isn't traveling to the future instantaneously, it's about how time is relevant to where you are. Stephen Hawkins did a special about it on the discovery channel. He said that time could be affected by an objects mass and gravitational pull, so, say if we were able to travel around a black hole, the time would be slowed by half, so spending 5 years orbiting the black hole would equal to 10 years passing on earth.

you do. then you disappear.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Read Rant by Chuck Palahniuk! It's basically about what you just said

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That depends on which theory of time travel you choose - like in BackttFuture each time travel creates a separate timeline based from that event.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My theory: We can go back in time, but as spectators. That way we can't screw anything up

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you just fucked my mind. now I will be up all night contemplating this.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

EXACTLY! this is why time travel confuses me soo much
