+141 If a black woman marries an Indian man - the man's family would have to pay lobola and the woman's family would have to pay the Indian family - they would probably cancel each other out and end up being a normal wedding, amirite?

What is normal? What WE are socialized to believe is normal... the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant ideal of what a wedding and marriage should look like? There is no such thing as normal, whites make up a VERY small portion of the population, we just imposed our values on EVERY other racial groups in an attempt to whitewash. But in all honesty there is no f***ing thing as normal.

i meant a wedding where neither families had to pay large sums of money to the other family. A 'free' wedding, where the only expenses are for the couple and their big day. I love the whole labola tradition, and Indian weddings are amazing. Just wondered what would happen if a culture where you get paid for your daughter and one where you're paid for your son got married. =D

That's only a South African custom, not all of Africa practices it, plus whose to say the couple would even practice that custom anymore if they are many generations from their ancestors that came over.

@1049677 (riri): Firstly: * there. Secondly: The word 'lobola' should be enough indication of which part of Africa I'm refering to... since I'm actually giving the name of the tradition... not just refering to black women in general... Sigh, why am I even trying to explain??? Your argument is invalid. Google lobola.(facepalm)

Actually, you did refer to black women in general...

no. "A black woman... - man has to pay lobola... -" extra information about first part of the sentence. Not black women in general, clearly black women from a certain culture with a certain tradition.
