+136 The proposed NY soda tax is ridiculous- the government has no business telling us what we should and shouldn't eat or drink, amirite?

i'm not a new yorker but this is total bullshit

The governor/mayor/something of New York City a while back also introduced legislation to make salt illegal in restaurants. Probably wanted people to pay more attention to their salt intake, not actually criminalize salt in restaurants, but still. People should be in charge of what they do with their bodies, and live with whatever consequences come their way. If someone wants to be fat, let them be fat. If they want to smoke, let them get cancer. A longer life is not necessarily a happier one.

In canada we've already had taxes on junk food for years. It's not a big deal.

I understand alcohol and cigs, because sometimes they effect other people [drunk driving, second hand smoke, etc.]. But junk food? oh. You get fat. What are you going to do? Roll over someone and suffocate them? This junk food tax is crazy.

I agree, it's pretty insane, and trust me I live in one of the fattest areas of America. I understand it, but I'm allergic to a lot of the healthy food, so I'd be screwed anyway.

It's called a sin tax. When people drink soda or eat fast food, they are making themselves more unhealthy and fatter, there's no denying that. It's not doing good. More people who eat fast food or drink soda will end up with health issues, that they can't neccessarily pay for. That's fine, but someone has to pay for it. Where can they get the money? How about a tax on the thing that created the problem in the first place so this kind of thing happens less and less often? It seems unfair but it makes sense.

But they can still complain about the government not providing enough health services for obesity: lap-banding surgery etc.

except when people are dying because of it...
