I was thinking of 'Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian', when Jed is in the hourglass towards the end.

Depends on how big the opening is. Eventually the sand might fill the bottom completely and you wouldn't have anywhere to go.

Well, in a realistic sense you most likely would not be able to,say, stand on top of the sand as it filled the hourglass; it would be too loosely packed to hold a person's weight. So there would be no escaping drowning. Although I never understood why Jasmine didn't even try to kick through the glass. That is what I would've done.
