No, poetry is not contained or supressed by the need for it fit and be warped around some chords, poetry is one of the ultimate expressions of beauty and art but song writing is dulled version of it, a trapped version. Much like art and photography

^ Disagree with that. But as for the post, have you never heard any spoken poetry? It can be very melodic.

I think everyone here is forgetting about instrumental music. It's an entirely separate thing from poetry, but it's still songwriting.
