+239 One of the problems with our society is the fact that we always use the phrase "are you okay" even if it is extremely obvious that the person is NOT okay. For instance: *fall down stairs* are you okay? *seizure* are you okay? *shot/stabbed* are you okay? *hit by a train* are you okay? amirite?

I think that's mostly to give something simple to respond to in order to check if they're conscious - something they don't have to think about.

Are you okay?

lol people could be okay after falling down the stairs

That's only in America you know.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not at all. We do it in Sweden and I'm sure people in other countries do it too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well surely not ONLY America, but it's mostly them. Of course it's used in other countries, just not as overused as there; *kid trips on shoelace* "!!! Are you okay?!"

I think you're required to say it if you're giving CPR. Doesn't mean it's not stupid, though.

What's weird is when people ask it after you do something totally normal, like sneezing. Of course I'm ok.

This annoying kid in my class asks me if I'm okay every time I cough, even if it's just a light cough. It's so irritating.

I get asking that if it's a huge cough and it sounds like it hurts, but if it's just clearing your throat that's over the top.
