-222 Atheists: You feel offended when people pray before eating a meal that you prepared, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Awkward I'd understand, but offended? Obviously you care enough about these people to cook for them, you should respect their beliefs by wanting to pray. If you don't believe in God, then don't pray, but don't force them to stop when they're not hurting you.

(Your+name+(optional)): But it's like the food I made for them isn't safe so they have to pray before they'll eat it. Can't they pray in their head instead of saying it aloud if they insist on praying?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They pray because they're thankful for the food, not because they're afraid it isn't safe.

The prayer I hear before meals asks for the food to be blessed, it isn't about thanking god for the food. Why would it be so unreasonable for people to pray silently to themselves if they know not everyone at the table shares their beliefs?

"Bless us, O Lord, and these, thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen." That's the prayer that I've said my whole life, and it's not meant to offend whoever cooked the meal. It's not like they're praying just because the cook is atheist, and it's not like they have anything against you. They're just thankful that they're fortunate enough to have a good meal, so they thank God. And no, that does not mean that they credit God for the meal instead of you, either. It's almost a routine. I know people that pray at every meal, no exceptions, because that's what they've always done.

Butthurt atheists?

Way to assume that everyone that's an atheist gives a damn about these matters. Stop generalizing and grow the fuck up.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Such language!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In no way did my comment even indicate that I thought atheists all thought about it. i made no generalizations at all. You need to "grow the fuck up" and not be make assumptions like a 4 year old.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't feel offended, but I get where you're coming from.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Stop being a little bitch about it

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i get mad when they make me pray before i eat when i just wanna stuff my face

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Personally I feel awkward just because I don't share their beliefs so I'm out of place while people pray before they eat. But if they're actually your friends then they'd be understanding if you asked them to pray silently while they're in your home (I assume you're talking about them being at your house and not you being at theirs, cause then they can do w/e they want in their own home.)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not everyone has the same beliefs as you do. Grow up and deal with it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know about my fellow atheists, but I'd be honored. They appreciate my cooking so much they thank their divine, all powerful leader for making eating it possible. That's pretty sweet.

What a nice way of putting it, it's good to see an Athiest that's not offended by other peoples' beliefs.

I just wonder: out of the people who voted this down (or up), how many are Atheists?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Voted down as an atheist.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Atheist, voted down. It's a dumb thing to get offended about.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm an Atheist. I voted down.

It's also like they're thanking god for the meal, when you're the one who bothered to prepare it for them. Rude.
