+178 There should be a public library that held every music album ever made instead of books. People could check out CDs and burn them onto their computer and then return them and check out more. This way people could stop complaining about the end of limewire (or other illegal downloading methods) and not have to spend a fortune buying songs on iTunes. Amirite?

I think this is a great idea, but then people would bitch about paying royalties to the artist or whatever. Music should be free, but people have turned everything from sports to childcare into businesses.

i hate corporations....food water and lots of other things should be free. Including music

i agree, but it would be really difficult to make that work in today's world

Think about if YOU were the artist, and you wrote, composed, played, and recorded this album that took several months to compile and get it just perfect, then you get very little profit from it. Sure artists do it because they love it, but a little income is nice too. Support the creative, hardworking artists and musicians out there. :)

You do realize, that is technically illegal too...

ripping music from a cd onto your computer is only legal to have as long as you possess the cd itself. If you borrow a cd from a friend and rip it to your computer, it's only legal until you give it back to your friend. If they had this library, it would only be legal if everyone deleted the music files from their computer every time they returned the respective cd's. gotta love the RIAA, right? Also, that rap about the artists making money: they make hundreds of thousands if not millions in profits from touring, they could easily adopt a profitable business model where the cd's are put out almost as advetising (for free) and rely on live performances for profits. Unfortunately, this would mean cutting out a lot of middlemen who make very large amounts of money for doing next to nothing, so it wont happen.

crap* not rap. can't edit on my phone.

Why oh why should music be free? I hear people say this all the time and it's never made sense to me. And @1437538: these middlemen don't do nothing. There are many people who are at recording sessions making sure everything happens smoothly (producers, engineers etc), executives who manage everything, marketing people who make sure that there is consumer interest, production, shipping, retailers. You may think that when you buy a cd you are only paying for music, but really you are paying for all these other services that allowed the cd to be on the shelf in the first place.

Or, you know just stop using a fucking Ipod. I have an mp3 player for 40$ and the music is 9 cents - free . It works just fine.
