+346 It's annoying when people say they're part one religion and part another because of their parents' religions. Religion is a choice. Not something you're born with. amirite?

Finally someone gets it!

So true...

It's especially annoying when they do it so they can receive gifts during Christmas AND Hanukkah.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hmm, depends. If they were doing it specifically for the gifts, then yes it would be annoying. But, say, if they were celebrating their own religious holidays, while trying to be respectful of their parent's religion, then I wouldn't think that was annoying.

Isn't Judaism also a heritage or something? Not just a religion. My 10th grade history teacher told us something like that, but I don't remember it clearly.

If you say that you're a jew (not in a racist way) that means you have a jewish culture. That doesn't necessarily mean you practice that religion, though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh. Ok. Thanks for clearing that up.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Technically, you're Jewish if your mother is Jewish. Or, if you convert. It's not really a choice, but I guess the way you choose to practice Judaism is a choice. Oh, this didn't answer your question. As the panda above me said, most people will label Judaism as race, even though it's a religion, because of our common ancestry and culture.

Yeah. I was looked up Karl Marx, and it said he was "Jewish Atheist" and I was like WTF. But it means he has Jewish blood through his mother's side, but his areligious views are atheist.

I hate it when people say that. And my mom is a Christian, and my dad is an Atheist. So then I would be half Christian and half Atheist. Wtf?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You know who else isn't something you're born with? My MOM!

Also, how you were raised does impact upon your life in a minute way. Of course all people were raised individually, but an atheist who was raised in an atheist household is going to be different from an atheist who was raised in a Catholic household.

What annoys me most is when people do that but with the same religion. "Well I'm half Catholic and half Christian"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

As someone who is half Jewish and half a follower of Judaism, it annoys me too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

All Catholics are Christians. They'd have to be half Catholic and half another denomination, while being a whole Christian.

well being born into this atmosphere with your parents can impact your decisions in religion, so it is influeced upon, but not entirely inherited upon.
