It's irritating when people don't want to watch a movie because the premise sounds stupid. You can make any great movie sound ridiculous by over simplifying its premise. "Oh, The King's Speech is about some guy with a stutter who has to give a speech. Black Swan is about some girl who wants to be the leading role in a ballet." Just give it a chance, amirite?
I'm not saying this is always true, but I've found that a lot of movies with basic/simple plots are actually good because it really gives the actors a chance to carry the bulk of the movie instead of relying on special effects and gunfire to make it a success.
Avatar is about a human trying to team up with aliens to save their planet by becoming one of them and learning their ways.
Fern Gully is about a human trying to team up with fairies to save their forest by shrinking down to their size and learning their ways.
Hang on.........
Titanic is about two people on a boat, but without TPain.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is about....oh wait:p
The Social Network is about rich white college boys who make websites.
Frost/Nixon is about an interview that took place after Watergate.
Breakfast Club is about a bunch of highschoolers who are in detention.
It can work the other way, too: Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first woman she meets and then teams up with three complete strangers to kill again. The Wizard of Oz
Separated from home, a cowboy and a space ranger must team up to defeat a masochistic enemy while learning about trust, infinity, and true friendship.
A fish looks for another fish.
Some guy? Try King of England in WWII XP
But yeah, I understand what you mean :P
