You might be retarded. Think about it, you think you aren't, but who really knows that they are? You have a lot of friends, you say? They're just trying to be nice to the kid who is mentally disabled. You get good grades? Teachers feel sorry for you. Have fun knowing that the rest of your life, amirite?

DUDE, I totally used to think this! It would keep me up late... I would think, "what if I'm not actually... normal?"

Nobody's normal, we're all individuals. If you think about normal doesn't actually exist, because we are all unique in some way.

@BurnyBurn Nobody's normal, we're all individuals. If you think about normal doesn't actually exist, because we are all unique...

Normal does exist, you hipster. We base "normal" on qualities that an overwhelming majority of the population and the average human being have, like two arms, two legs, two eyes, etc. etc.

That's true... I guess I shouldn't worry too much, it's just a wacky thought. Do people with disabilities know that they have disabilities?

I couldn't be retarded and earn a 5-digit salary, can I?

@I couldn't be retarded and earn a 5-digit salary, can I?

To be mentally retarded is to have an IQ of less than 70. So you could be a really stupid super model and be retarded with more than a 5 digit salary.

Then what is this better definition that you know?

@Then what is this better definition that you know?

Wait ok, I found that you must have an IQ of less than 70, significant limitations in two or more areas of adaptive behavior, and limitations must have occurred before age 18.

While mental retardation can be caused by genetic problems such as down syndrome, that is not the sole cause. FAS can cause brain developmental problems. Also oxygen deprivation and diseases can cause brain damage, especially at young ages. Where did you get that it has to be a genetic problem? If it is a reliable source then I will gladly admit that you are right. Also, while the IQ system is by no means the best test for cognitive function, the DSM-IV lists an IQ of less than 70 as criteria for mental retardation.

Do I really come out as that stressed over this? Whenever I talk to people on amirite they always tell me to chill in some way or form, but I'm not like getting emotional over this... Oh but anyways, when you keep telling me it's a technicality, what do you mean by that? Like I'm using the completely scientific, no-one really cares definition? Because ya, I know.

Welfaaaaare ;D ahahah [just kidding. it's a joke. seriously. for all you people who take everything literally]

@I couldn't be retarded and earn a 5-digit salary, can I?

Don't be proud of your 5 digit salary, that pretty much most of the middle class have. When you are capable of earning say, 6 digits, then you may be proud of yourself. As of now don't bother.

I wasn't being proud of the fact that i have a 5-digit salary. I was just pointing out the fact that it's very very rare for a mentally disabled person to earn that much.

If I'm retarded, then what about the kids who run with their arms outstretched and limbsided?

Standardized tests, though not a perfect system, could prove this right/wrong.

I was talking about this to my friend, the conversation kinda went like this:
Me: What if I'm retarded and I just didn't know it? You would tell me right??
Friend: I don't think you a- wait. no, no you're not!

I'm not so sure now...

If you've ever had this thought, I think you're okay. If you were mentally disabled enough to hinder your lifestyle, you'd probably not be capable of thinking these thoughts. Of course, I mean this in the nicest way. Everybody's got some sort of quirk. Don't just sit there and hope that you're not 'retarded', if it's not lessening the quality of your life, then don't worry about it.

But yes, I've definitely thought this before. Kinda freaked me out. :P

That's so weird. Between the ages of 5 and 10, I believed that I was just a little bit retarded. But then I realized that I can do things like swimming without drowning and read at an extremely advanced level for my age.

well if ur giving good grades to retards, then that would make sense why there are so many in my honors/AP classes.

Oh my gosh, I always think that, I was watching this documentary of these people with downs that got married (it was amazing, they were the sweetest couple on earth) and they were asking them if they knew what down syndrome was and they said yes and then they asked them if they had it and they said no. If you were, you wouldn't even know it!

cmonsters avatar cmonster Yeah You Are 0Reply

Do you mean like, special ed? Because there's a class for that at my school. My friend's sister is in the class, so I go with her to eat lunch with them. If that's what you mean I'm pretty sure I'm fine.
I'm also in acting, and probably wouldn't get cast if I had those problems.

Well unfortunately scantron and math are not able to be graded subjectively and in both math and most scantron tests I score exceptionally, therefore my grade is not based upon how my teachers feel about me. Way to be wrong, retard.

I have this same post... guess it's never getting homepaged now.

I don't like Miley Cyrus. I'm not retarded.

I really don't see people being nice to the legitimately handicapped kids. If anything, kids are even crueller to them. The handicapped kids also have an assistant teacher follow them around to make sure they don't get lost or hurt themselves.

People generally feel like idiots when talking about stuff with me. They get mad at me because I know too much, and often get tired of me being so smart. I can actually control the flow of one of my classes. The teacher likes to ask questions, and I can decide whether to let class progress by answering it, or I can make us spend five minutes on the question because nobody else ever speaks up.

@Mike_Hawk I really don't see people being nice to the legitimately handicapped kids. If anything, kids are even crueller to...

You know, maybe them getting tired of you "being so smart" is really them getting tired of you being a know-it-all jerk...

@You know, maybe them getting tired of you "being so smart" is really them getting tired of you being a know-it-all...

I'd say there's a fine line between being smart and being a know-it-all jerk. I don't tell my friends they're wrong or rub their noses in it. I just happen to know a lot of stuff, and it actually disgusts me that people are upset by the pursuit of knowledge.

@Mike_Hawk I really don't see people being nice to the legitimately handicapped kids. If anything, kids are even crueller to...

Did you ever think that the teacher asks questions to try and let people figure it out on their own? I mean, maybe people do think you're a know-it-all, but maybe people are just frustrated because they don't get a chance to work it out. School isn't just about learning facts and having the answers, it's about learning to solve problems. If that means taking an extra five minutes for people to solve it when you could just move on by telling them the answers, then it's worth it for the other people in your class.
