How could they have explained that? "Well, we were almost right, but then this other planet came out of nowhere and.. actually, never mind. You've probably never even heard of it." amirite?

Nope, real events in history. Our knowledge of gravity wasn't good enough to accurately judge this, so they invented Vulcan. Vulcan just so happens to be where Mr. Spock is from. :P
