Okay I'm gay and I accept that people use the word "gay" as a synonym for stupid. I even catch myself doing it sometimes. I try not to though, not because I find it offensive but because I think it's a dead giveaway that I'm a teenager. I'd rather sound like a more mature speaker.

Homosexuality is not the only definition of "gay". it also means happy. But I DO know that it doesn't mean "stupid". And I want to say that I think "Oh, well my gay friend isn't offending by it" is a bad argument, based on hearsay. Because, I have gay friends who are offended by it. A lot of them. I don't see why it's such a big deal for people who use it to mean "stupid". There are tons of less-offensive synonyms; get a freaking thesaurus.

I say "gay" as a negative descriptive word all the time. When you consider the alternatives - "stupid" means a person who has a low IQ, "lame" means someone who is physically handicapped, "dumb" means someone with a mental handicap - so why do people consider words that were originally used to slander disabled people accepted to use, but a word that means homosexual not acceptable?

Oh sorry, you're right about the first one - dumb does mean someone who can't talk, I got it wrong. Also, retarded just on it's own means slow - mentally retarded means a mental handicap, but fire can be retarded, and so can bombs - although the word association usually disregards the fact that retarded can mean slow for non-mental or non-human things.

Neither I nor any other gay person I personally know take offense at people throwing around the word gay. Most don't even mind when people use the word fag. The people offended by these words are almost invariably straight in my experience.

The fact that people use it as a synonym to the word "stupid" is offensive, whether or not the person supports gay rights or being gay. I have friends who use "gay" to call things stupid and I tell them I'm offended by it. It's offensive because the word is the same. The word doesn't mean stupid, so it shouldn't be used in that context because every time it is it's calling gay people stupid.

When it gets to the point when people kill themselves because of intolerence, that means it's time to stop using gay as a synonym for stupid. Many people are lucky enough to have been raised in an environment where they understand that there is a difference in meaning, but unfortunately many people aren't. Using "gay" to mean stupid enforces the idea that there is something wrong with homosexuality. Since there's not, we should try to avoid this, especially since it causes people to abuse each other.
