+420 Some schools and even colleges don't let their teachers use red pens to grade because it "hurts the students' self-esteem." These kids are going to go far in life, amirite?

My friend is a teacher and she uses purple to grade. All that does it teach kids that purple is "bad" or whatever it is that they think red ink is supposed to do. Too stupid.

Except red is a universally "bad" color. Think about it-stop lights, stop signs, fire and firetrucks, blood and even the devil. Just taking away the red pens isn't going to take away that stigma.

Apparently not. Also, red is passion and love. Red has many different attachments. And she says she's seen no change in her kids reactions. Which is something she's supposed to try and notice (apparently) as part of this new trial thing.

Yeah, that's true. It seems like when something is red it's full of meaning, not as neutral like blue or purple. I'm skeptical of it working as well, but I do think it's at least a tiny bit better to get a purple colored paper than a red one.

She says that the kids didn't even notice. I've had papers randomly graded in different colours because of the teacher losing their pen or something, and it makes no difference to me. Ultimately it's that percentage/letter at the top that makes an impact, not the colour.

That's fucking stupid.

My AP English teacher uses purple, green, etc. because she doesn't like red. She's also an AP grader, the best teacher I have ever had and one of the smartest people I've ever met. Sure, it may be kind of stupid, but when all of your margins are filled with notes, there may be some legitimacy.

It is a little easier to read when it's not bright red... But I used to take notes in bright colours to make it stick in my head. I dunno if that ever really worked, though lol.

That is bullshit, and I have heard of it before. These kids are too pampered, what's the next step, wrapping them up in bubblewrap? Maybe their self esteem needs a few blows once in a while, maybe their feelings need to get hurt, so they learn how to develop a thick skin and not take stupid stuff seriously.

I could use a blow, Simon...

Sounds like these students need to harden the fuck up.

Ahh Fucking Chopper, ayy, he's fucking choice.

These kids are either brilliant (if they can convince their teachers to think that) or unbelievably soft (for letting a colour get to them, wtf?).

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I fear the day my peers have to face the real world. People get offended at the smallest criticism.

Go far in life? Because of a pen color? Stupid fucking post

At my school, level 1/ AP is the highest level class, then there's level 2, and then there's level 2a. They call it '2a' so students won't feel bad if they're in level 3. In my opinion, assuming that they won't notice they're in the stupidest level is a bigger insult to their intelligence than simply calling it level 3.
