+313 All these people are saying that it's ridiculous that the world is paying attention to things such as the royal wedding when there are wars and devastation all over the world but, what if that's the reason that we're paying attention to menial things? What if we need something to distract us from how horrible somethings are? amirite?

The real reason our news is sugarcoated with nice, fluffy stories rather than the cold, hard truth is because a handful of corporations control the bulk of the media. These corporations are much more interested in maximizing investor returns than anything else. This has caused investigative journalism to nearly disappear, because it is expensive and time-consuming. To replace investigation, most of our news now comes from PR firms with little to no fact-checking.

False. That's not how PR works. There are "advertorials" which are rare. 99.9% of the time, advisories and releases are submitted - and then the reporter will cover and write their own piece. Even then, it's tough because many news sources ignore PR.

All of what I said is true. Around 80% of our investigative stories originate as PR releases. Yes, you are right, the journalists then cover these releases and write their own pieces on them. I thought that was implied. The fact is, most journalists do little to no fact checking before they cover the releases.

Sounds like denial.

Also, most people don't pay very much attention to the news anyway, so it's not like everyone knows what's going on due to short memory as well.
