Nah, I think it just depends which education district you're in, what school you attend or what teacher you have, 'cause we actually learned about that in grade 7.
I've gone to different American/International schools in a few different countries, and I've yet to learn about it. And my teacher in Algebra 2 really pushed us. But at least I learned about it on amirite?
I think we did learn factorials at some point in 9 or 10, didn't really pay attention, but I know for a fact that we never learned that "!" could be used as one
"!" is the mathematical symbol for factorial, so I guarantee that if you did anything more than hear about it you learned it. You may have forgotten, but there is not another symbol, so you learned this one, if any.
I'm in the IB too, in the 2nd best IB international school in the world, and we haven't gone into details on factorials yet. I know we'll be doing it in more depth later on but all schools do stuff in different orders no matter what course they do so that's probably why some people haven't done it yet. But hey, the IB is just a 2 year program, so why were you going IB stuff in grade 9 anyway?
I only went on for 1 second, but this is what I saw :
A guy on another guy, (naked) the guy on top was very badly injured and full of blood..especially near the 'spot', and ... yes... thats all I saw.. I quickly pressed back.
Well, it was posted in the "jokes" section, so it was intended to be funny.
It's true that it's a factual statement, but it's one where unless you catch the fact that the ! is actually factorial, not just a punctuation mark, you won't understand it.
But everyone has a different sense of humor.
The ! point doesn't make sense if it's being used as punctuation, although the post is grammatically incorrect either way. I guess I've always thought that jokes that need the amirite at the end to be considered jokes unfunny.
I didn't mean forget how to do it, or forget what it means...More like forget it exists. If someone says factorial to you, you should probably remember it, but if you see an exclamation point, you'll think of LA, not math.
In defense of all the people who didn't get it the first time, Hipster didn't use punctuation after saying 4!, so logically, they would think that the ! was the punctuation at the end.
Stupidity? So you post a meme that is older than my grandmother, and guess what, its not funny. Only people with the mentality of a goldfish would post something that stupid. Either that, or you are a thumbs up whore who realizes that using memes will get thumbs ups. And you expect me not to respond? You're stupidity angers me.
I can't imagine the percentage of people on Youtube that wouldn't get it...amirite's not that bad, especially since factorials aren't very common until you get into serires.
well you can re-read the comments and then think it in your head instead of me getting 30,000 notification
"i learned it in 5th grade"
"well i learned it in 6th"
"well i learned it in 7th grade"
Its annoying
Or when doing anything involving probability, or in generalizing the terms of a Taylor Series, or in generalizing differential equations, or in generalizing just about anything else. But if you're a lib. ed. major, go ahead and forget about it, you'll never need it.
Really now? Factorials are middle school math. At first, I wondered why it was on this site...it's hardly funny, and if everyone posted math problems on this site, it would be drab. Now I know that at least 160 people don't know their basic math!
The thing is, it's a fairly bad post. It's either something you won't understand, assuming you don't know what factorials are, or, assuming you do know what they are, it's simply a statement, much like me posting '2 + 2 = 4, amirite?'
I got this because me and my friend used to pass notes on my graphing calculator, and my friend used an exclamation point, which blew my mind until it was explained to me.
I read this post the day it was POTD, and it really frustrated me because I didn't know what factorials were. When I learned them today in math class, I was like omg I get this post now!
I'm not very good at math...and I have never seen an '!' being used in my lessons or anything :P So, I didn't understand at all...and after reading the comments I still don't!
No you can't. To write it out long hand would take orders of magnitude more paper than has ever existed. I can tell you it will end in well over 134 MILLION zeros (the number of zeros is possible to find), but the numbers before that would not be possible to work out.
In my opinion, he's right. Granted, it's a bit more advanced mathematically than saying 1+1 =2, but nonetheless it's just posting a mathematical function. By your logic me making a post that says '2+2=10, amirite?', and making my username base4 would be funny, but it wouldn't.
Incorrect. I'm assuming you're American and also spell things as spelled, organize and color - as opposed to spelt, organise and colour. Where I'm from, we use the latter, including learnt. Surely you know that other countries use British English.
We never used any symbols for it. Just ''multiply 4 by its factors''. We learnt the word factors, not factorials, though I'm sure they're the same thing.
I suppose it's different to American maths.
They are very not the same thing. Factorial is the product of all the integers from one up to the number. Factors are all the numbers that will divide evenly into a number. Each integer has only one factorial, but most have several factors.
im in college and i never remember using factorials at all, i even had a beginner math class last semeseter(mind you it was the most basic math) and i dont remember doing that, but then again i didnt show up half the time
All people who disagreed are wrong. Actually, 4! means 4 factorial, which is the shorthand way to write 4x3x2x1.
Ah. I see now.
So is 3! = 3x2x1, and 6! = 6x5x4x3x2x1?
....am i the only one who has never seen this before :/ and is rather disurbed?!?
...I am ment to be in the top set in my year :/
I'm taking Algebra 2, and I've never seen it. I think it's higher level shrug
I learned it in Algebra 2.
I taught myself factorials when I was in elementary school 'cause I'm a nerd like that, but I don't think I saw them in a class until Pre Calc
The concept is easy, but I guess they just bring them in later on.
Don't worry, I've never seen it and I've taken the highest math for my grade level
question???
what does 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mean??? ;P
calculator overflow.
I came this <...............> close to voting it down...
Someone feels inadequate...
@1193967 (B_Diddy):
http://ctrlv.in/23863
you guys don't do maths do you
MATH IS TOO MAINSTREAM. I THOUGHT YOU KNEW THAT? (BTW, LOWERCASE LETTERS ARE TOO MAINSTREAM AS WELL)
salmon are too mainstream
Non-avian rodents are too mainstream
Non-multi-purpose cutlery... too mainstream.
large rivers are too mainstream.
I just finished pure math 20 last semester and I was never taught that "!" meant factorial.
math 20...?
Pure math 20 means the highest math level for grade 11, I think it's a Canadian thing only
Canada is weird.
I'm pretty sure it's only an Alberta thing.
Yeah most other places have 9-12 high schools, so everything has to be done differently.
My highschool includes 7-12
Do you live in Alberta? Or did you creep my profile?
Technically, you cannot "creep" somebody's profile. You put the information out there for anyone to see. Hence, you're susceptible to "creeping."
Touché, but it's still creeping
I live in Alberta. I did check your profile just to make sure I wasn't completely wrong though.
IB YEAAAAAA (: haha
I think we did learn factorials at some point in 9 or 10, didn't really pay attention, but I know for a fact that we never learned that "!" could be used as one
"!" is the mathematical symbol for factorial, so I guarantee that if you did anything more than hear about it you learned it. You may have forgotten, but there is not another symbol, so you learned this one, if any.
Well I definitely don't remember it
It is different, I as well am in IB, but my friends in regular have yet to learn it.
I'm in the IB too, in the 2nd best IB international school in the world, and we haven't gone into details on factorials yet. I know we'll be doing it in more depth later on but all schools do stuff in different orders no matter what course they do so that's probably why some people haven't done it yet. But hey, the IB is just a 2 year program, so why were you going IB stuff in grade 9 anyway?
whoa thats so weird...so like you have an entire 5 years to do the course???? LUCKY! we have 18 months to cover the entire syllabus for all of IB.
We actually learned in the 6th grade...
um yeah I learnt that in sixth grade
I thought it was amusing when I read this post the YYA vote was 43 and the NW vote was 21.
4321
You were the 24th comment. Also amusing.
Your coment has +24
NOBODY TOUCH IT
The post is about numbers, that's why I made a comment about numbers. I can't tell if you're being critical of me
What's your opinion on faggots who literally want to 69 with you?
At first I was confused at why this math was so wrong but then I realized you're a hipster.
I am worried that so many people agreed with your comment
It's not wrong. Ever learned about permutations and combinations?
Ah, math humor. ♥
Ah, jen. ♥
Ah, B_Diddy. ♥
B_Diddy apologizes and would like to give you a peace offering.
If it isn't chocolate, i'm not buying.
Is this good?
Only if it's got caramel in it....
http://ctrlv.in/24562
deal
Grr... How do you do the other heart?
Fuck you! no one go to that site
you were the sole reason i looked...
hahahahahahahahahahaha
....
Never trusting amirite for links to weird sites again.
I only went on for 1 second, but this is what I saw :
A guy on another guy, (naked) the guy on top was very badly injured and full of blood..especially near the 'spot', and ... yes... thats all I saw.. I quickly pressed back.
Copy and Pasties.
Where's the humor? It's just a factual statement involving maths, that's hardly humorous.
This says a lot about the education levels of the amirite users.
What do you mean? The above comments, or the fact that most people got it?
I think factorials are one of those things that once you move on to the next grade, you forget all about it...
It's not that hard to remember...
I didn't mean forget how to do it, or forget what it means...More like forget it exists. If someone says factorial to you, you should probably remember it, but if you see an exclamation point, you'll think of LA, not math.
OH...now i get it...clever person you are.
You just made it more confusing by adding, "Think about it" because I thought it was actually something complicated and required brain power.
Me too. It didn't help that I didn't see the '!'. I was doing some insane math, then I read the comments.
At first, I just thought Hipster was excited to tell us that he found out a cool math problem. Then I noticed the "!" was part of the equation.
oh you silly people who disagreed... :P
I completely forgot factorials. I haven't seen that shit since 7th grade.
Phew... I thought I was the only one.
In defense of all the people who didn't get it the first time, Hipster didn't use punctuation after saying 4!, so logically, they would think that the ! was the punctuation at the end.
Yes, that was the joke
i don't give a flying fuck
How about a fuck with both feet firmly on the ground?
Thank you, I take pride in my unobservance. BTW, a comment would be like "I solved factorials before it was the cool thing to solve factorials"
You are easily offended. Have you considered anger management classes?
@1@1195225 (SOFTBALL8): AHAHA I get it. Hipster. Lawl
I'm in Pre-Calculus and I have never learned this. Curse you public school system.
O.o really?
Same here. I'm in calc and trig and never learned this...
LOL everyone who said it does not equal 4! has obviously failed grade 12 math hahaha!
Grade 12?
More like grade 8.
more like grade 8 and reviewed in grade 10.
Well, you're also Asian - so that explains a bit.
I didn't see them until 10th grade.
Are you saying blacks can't attend your school?
An all-white school and a school whose majority happens to be white aren't the same thing... You're not displaying your smart Asian-ess very well.
wtf?
everywhere I go is are Asians as the majority...
I didn't see factorials in math class until grade 11. :/
lmfao! grade 12? lol nice school.
At my school, courses are more or less electives. There are no designated classes for each grade except for English classes.
I can't imagine the percentage of people on Youtube that wouldn't get it...amirite's not that bad, especially since factorials aren't very common until you get into serires.
You know sometimes I learn more from posts on here than I do at school :P
and they say you'll never use this in real life...
And Anthony switches things up on us by instead of most favorite reminding us of 8th grade math!
Well played Mr.Kuske, well played...
You know that Mr. Kuske got fired right? He was always nice to the smart kids, but to the AVERAGE kids, he was just plain MEAN.
Most of the people who did it 10th/11th/12th grade probably learned it in more depth than the people doing it in 7th grade.
further application then? Give me a break I learned it in 1722! I don't remember this poppycock!
Tits a joke. And a reference.
I don't think it's intelligence level, people just didn't see the !
Fail comments > Post
I'm a sophomore, right now in algebra 2 and geometry. My school has never taught me about factorials.
same here. I figured that the "!" sign meant something and I never learned that "!" meant factorial
(It's kinda funny because it says this -was- POTD on Apr27, and it's only Apr26 where I am... I feel like a time traveller)
I get it!!!!!!!
omfg I am a retard. That took me ages.
haha love this nerdy post! took me a while to get...
Dear Everyone above,
I would just like to say that NONE CARES when the hell you learned the factorials
Sincerly, The rest of us here
It's first time I see someone use a DBPB format without actually stealing a DBPB post... Can't say if it's a good thing or not.
It's a good thing ... trust me ;)
It's a bad thing. You have never had to write a letter before?
I kind of care. I don't want to be the only dumb one here.
well you can re-read the comments and then think it in your head instead of me getting 30,000 notification
"i learned it in 5th grade"
"well i learned it in 6th"
"well i learned it in 7th grade"
Its annoying
You only got two replies. Don't be nasty only because I disagree with you.
no i favorited the post so i got a bunch of things saying people made comments... i apologize for being a online bitch :P will you accept my apology?
I should say sorry! I misunderstood XD
ahaha well thats okay :P lol no problem :P
Dear god, THIS is POTD?
Dear God, they're letting people like YOU on the internet?
Dear God, why won't you answer my questions?
Dear god, that was uncalled for.
I hate how my school finds geometry more important than stuff like this
Don't worry. We never use this. Unless you want to find how many different combinations x friends could stand in a line (x!).
Or when doing anything involving probability, or in generalizing the terms of a Taylor Series, or in generalizing differential equations, or in generalizing just about anything else. But if you're a lib. ed. major, go ahead and forget about it, you'll never need it.
I just KNEW this crap would come back to haunt me later! Thank god sophomore year was the year I decided grades matter.
Wow that's weird.... I just learned this in math today
I love how I learned this today and was still confused by it. I thought the OP was just excited about it.
http://myfacewhen.com/106/
Okay I don't see why this post is good?
It's just factorial o.O It equals 4! So what?
It looks like he is exclaiming 4, not saying 4!.
I think you didn't even get it and are just tring to act smart.
Yeah I understood that but I don't find it funny...
no one ever said it was supposed to be funny loser
POTDs are usually clever or funny in some way. I don't think this one is good enough, that's all.
well lately, it's been so that the posts that get the most favorites one day becomes the POTD the next day.
In layman's terms, preferably, can someone smart tell me how 0! = 1?
'CAUSE I'VE BEEN TRYNA WORK IT OUT OHHHHH
Ahaha at first I voted no way but then I was like FACTORIAL!
http://instantostrich.com
Took me a couple of tries, but I finally got it.
Don't forget Sigma Notation!
simple math guys. its simple math.
Factorials can smd.
(Taja_Rage):Word. I've never used it.
You're supposed to learn factorials in Algebra 2
I fucking hate math.
Even when your having the best of times on the computer school (Math) always seems to get ya...
I totally didnt read that as a factorial, but instead read it as "FOUR TIMES THREE TIMES TWO TIMES ONE EQUALS 4!"
Really now? Factorials are middle school math. At first, I wondered why it was on this site...it's hardly funny, and if everyone posted math problems on this site, it would be drab. Now I know that at least 160 people don't know their basic math!
Different counties have different standards. In some counties, you don't need to learn factorials at all.
I was doing factorials all day and I can't believe I took about 2 minutes to understand this post.
THIS IS MADNESS!?!!?? Why does 1!=1 then????
3! = 3x2x1
2! = 2x1
1! = 1
1 is multiplied by every positive number lower than 1, as 3 is multiplied by every positive number lower than 3.
every positiver whole number
yes it does, retards@1192066 (ikillawesome): HA! you retard yes it does
be careful when reading it
Ok. Explain to me how it is 4.
Its not 4
it's 4!
Don't be an ass... look at his name, the boy is obviously mentally weak, just explain it to him.
Silly middle schooler.
Or freshman...
Freshman haha. And its pretty funny. I give everyone permission to troll my ass for the rest of eternity.
4! is also known as 4 factorial, which is 432*1.. so, yeah.
Aww... if you give people permission, it's no fun!
Ok.
Thanks, I get it now.
Ohhh. Before your comment, I was like
but then I was like
The thing is, it's a fairly bad post. It's either something you won't understand, assuming you don't know what factorials are, or, assuming you do know what they are, it's simply a statement, much like me posting '2 + 2 = 4, amirite?'
This is definitely not an opinion. It should have been deleted. I can't believe it's POTD now.
I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or totally mocking me.
That's not a term! A term is a monomial part of an expression or equation.
y = 3x + 2abx + 1
y, 3x, 2abx, and 1 are all terms.
4! is only one term.
Uh.. YES.
You asshole. Yes it does. Check your facts before you comment.
Did you just call yourself an asshole?
Yes. I did. You are obviously not getting the joke here.
I feel like the South African education system has deprived me...I'm an A maths student in grade 11 and i've never seen that.
Meep.
I agree, I'm finished with school and never saw that... Or I just forgot if we did I guess. :?
well it depends on what math you're in. it's usually in late algebra 2, or precal.
OH I GET IT
heheh took me a little while to get. very clever.
Hahha that's funny we just started the probability unit in trig
oh jesus.
they play me in heaven?! and no offense, but i'm still in love with judas.
I didn't even need to think about this, because I'm pretty used to seeing n!
I realized right away that the "!" stood for something but I couldn't remember what until I saw the comments.
bahaha, this is amazing. :) and people seriously haven't heard of factorials? o: i learned them in algebra 2 as a sophomore.
i still dont get it... but im in 6th grade so ill probably come back on this when im in 8th grade and go "ooooh i get it!"
Also, if you care, by definition 0! = 1. It seems a little weird, but it makes things work
Of course, you're only eleven.
It took me forever to get it and then as I was just about to move on, i noticed the ! exclamation point at the end.
8th grade math... you make me feel witty.
Factorials!!!! took me a while to get it lol
im in grade 11, i can vouch for those who didnt know "!" meant factorial, although i did learn it outside of school (dont ask)
For some reason, that reminds me of the comments about dislikes on YouTube..
hahahaha, clever! C x L x E x V x E x R
More like CL(E2)VR
factorials...thats a knee-slapper
I got this because me and my friend used to pass notes on my graphing calculator, and my friend used an exclamation point, which blew my mind until it was explained to me.
Oh, sorry then!
in south african schools you just get the subject 'maths'.
WE FUCKING KNOW
..that wasn't very nice..
it had already been said like 80 times in the comments above something only needs to be explained so many times dude
lol useful? yeah...okay...
This person was trying to explain to another person. You don't have to be an asshole.
Damn, I haven't used factorials in a while... shows how much I need to review for math !
Ohhhhhh. Factorials. Got it. Oh well. How do I undo this now?
Anyway, they taught us that in like 6th grade.
Not to brag or anything but I learned this in 4th grade... Maybe it is just that you guys don't remember this, and no I am not asian!
just because people dont know this doesnt mean they are stupid. maybe we use our minds for shit that matters...
Knowing math kinda sorta matters.
In their defense it's not like not knowing factorials will hurt you..you can just write them out.
Until your math teacher tells you to find 2681497468!
Find it? Not possible. There are only two ways to represent that number. The first is what you typed, the seconds is /CALCULATOR OVERLOAD/
You can find it by hand...it would just take a helluva long time.
No you can't. To write it out long hand would take orders of magnitude more paper than has ever existed. I can tell you it will end in well over 134 MILLION zeros (the number of zeros is possible to find), but the numbers before that would not be possible to work out.
Not a lot of comments for POTD.
Too many comments for POTD.
i didnt get it. but im only in the 8th grade d: soo yeuh (:
I can tell by your spelling and grammar.
I'm in 7th grade, and I already learned this.
its 24... idgi...
please refer to the 200 comments above
OMG I JUST GOT IT and i love it BEST.POST.EVAR. but i think its a repeat but i could care less
Wait... You could care less? Seems like you couldn't care less..
You know what, im done, you win.
You put on quite a tussle... But that did make me laugh
:D
Oh yes i feel special :D
that was the shortest amirite argument i've ever witnessed.
Yes i try
OMG this is so dumb.
it's like postin 1+1=2 ,amirite?
cause
1=1!
2x1=2!
3x2x1=3!
it's just posting a basic mathematical function
No, it's making you go "Lol, stupid person" but then go "OOOOOOOOH I C WUT U DID THAR"
In my opinion, he's right. Granted, it's a bit more advanced mathematically than saying 1+1 =2, but nonetheless it's just posting a mathematical function. By your logic me making a post that says '2+2=10, amirite?', and making my username base4 would be funny, but it wouldn't.
I actually think that would be pretty funny. But I'm a math nerd, so...
That would make sense, but I've never heard of using an exclamation mark in maths.
Like it said a few comments above, factorials.
I saw that, I'm just saying I've never seen an ! used to show that.
Really?? Thats odd...
Older than that. We learnt factorials, just never with that symbol.
Incorrect. I'm assuming you're American and also spell things as spelled, organize and color - as opposed to spelt, organise and colour. Where I'm from, we use the latter, including learnt. Surely you know that other countries use British English.
Chester came to school and said,
“Durn, I growed another head.”
Teacher said, “It’s time you knowed
The word is ‘grew’ instead of ‘growed’ ”
I never learned anything about factorials and I'm in 9th grade.
its advanced algebra
so in california it would be algebra, geometry(which is prob what you're taking) and then advanced algebra
I'm assuming you live in california.
Where I'm from we didn't learn factorials until 11th grade. It probably just depends where you live.
I'm s senior in calculous and trig and never learned factorals
What symbol do you use? I've never heard of another way of writing factorial.
Each integer has only one factorial, but most have several factors.
im in college and i never remember using factorials at all, i even had a beginner math class last semeseter(mind you it was the most basic math) and i dont remember doing that, but then again i didnt show up half the time
I learned it in 4th grade, man.
keep up.
Yes you have.
Congrats!
You aren't alone, we've never been taught that.
4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 4
12 x 2 x 1 = 4
24 x 1 = 4
Hell no!!!!!
(Pedro Juan Estaban): you forget factorials
when i read the "4!" i shouted it in my mind and read the "4" normally
(Pedro Juan Estaban): Hells to the yes!
