Most people who don't like iPads know nothing about them. Unless you're some extensive code writer, most of what you need to do can be done on an iPad. If you're downloading programs and updating software on things, then get a laptop. You obviously have access to a regular computer, so that shouldn't matter too much. So pretty much anything you want to do can be done on an iPad. Well, except play flash games

I have an iPad and don't think it could ever replace a laptop. It doesn't work with Flash, it's difficult to type on (my typing speeds are halved on an iPad), trying to do any work like writing documents will be infuriating, and it costs money to get decent apps that would be free on a computer (like a decent web browser).

I've got an iPad myself, and i must say they are cool, but can also be a pain in the butt as well. they're hard to type on, and programs cost money, whereas you can already have some on a laptop. They're very good for keeping things organized and enlarged rather than other ipods, but are also unforunate because you can't plug usb's into them, which would be nice. so, i think that you'd get more for your money with a laptop.
