+365 You understand that having brown eyes is the dominant gene and having blue eyes is the recessive, but it's strange that having six fingers is the dominant gene while having five is the recessive, amirite?

The gene for 6 fingers may be dominant, but that mutation is uncommon so it normally doesn't happen. You need a parents with 6 fingers for the baby to inherit the gene.

And even then, there's a 25 percent chance that they won't, assuming one parent has 5 fingers and the other has 6.

I'm aware that dominant genes aren't always more prevalent. If two people are homozygous recessive, then their child will have the recessive gene. Over the years, the recessive gene of having 5 fingers per hand has become more prevalent because it is a gene most people possess, regardless of the fact that it is not dominant. It's just counterintuitive.
