Christianity comes from Judaism, and the Bible was originally written in Hebrew, so I guess church is still correct.

Also, are synagogues considered to be a type of church, or is church a purely Christian word?

Well, the New Testament was written and Greek, and church is generally a Christianity-specific word. There are similar words for other religions (synagogue, mosque, etc.), but they generally mean the same thing.
