+310 The only reason Romeo and Juliet's romance is viewed as so "ideal" is because it was cut short during the infatuation stage. Had they not died, we might've seen them months down the road saying things more like, "Romeo, Romeo, why art thou here, Romeo?" or "What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is in the West," amirite?

lol I never really viewed it as ideal.. more like the most accepted an hero story ever told.

Lolol. Society has stamped it as the clichéd "true love" story though, which is stupid.

(Rocky):Yea, exactly.

Why does everyone always hate on Romeo and Juliet? I loved it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not hating on the play. I'm hating on what society has turned it into. When someone hears "Romeo and Juliet," they don't think "some stupid kids who killed themselves," they generally think of it as a defining picture of "love."

No, I usually hear the former nowadays. But I would agree, in the general society, people would call it a classic love story. When I read the play, I thought of it more as a teenage rebel story than a love story. That's why I was able to justify their suicides - they'd rather die together than feel imprisoned by their petty, imprisoned lives. I wouldn't do the same, ever, and maybe suicide shouldn't be glorified, but I still found it compelling and relatable.

you messed up the quotes... sorry just felt the need to tell you(: this post is very true though :D

by Anonymous 12 years ago

...how did I mess up the quotes? I changed them on purpose to prove my point.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It should be "It is the East and Juliet is the Sun"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

...I know what the actual line is. I just said I changed it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh.. sorry(: I feel dumb now xD

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's all the Friar's fault: a) Married Romeo and Juliet b) gave Juliet the sleeping potion that made her appear dead c) Left Juliet in the tomb alone with dead Romeo

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And he would've gotten away with it too!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If it hadn't been for those lousy kids and their meddling dog!

Meddling kids and their dumb dog*

I always felt that Romeo and Juliet was too lusty. It felt like they were just suicidal people who blamed their suicidal reasons on their so called love. They barely even talked, how could they possibly even be so in love!!!!! its a stupid love story. Pride and prejudice was better :) GO JANE AUSTEN! even A Tale of Two Cities had a better developed love story.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree. They had only known each other for a few days and managed to have sex, get married, and die.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Umm... I guess it works for your post, but "Wherefore" means why. She isn't asking where he is.
