They weren't lunatics until the aliens removed large portions of their brains. They were actually quite intelligent specimens.

But you never hear about them being smart before the abduction - they were always crazy before they were abducted - you never hear "Sam had gone insane now, but before the reported alien abduction, he was a small-town lawyer" or "Ellie can't speak properly now, but before she was a beloved housewife and member of the community" or anything.

I know this sounds crazy... but I *DO* believe in aliens, and it would only make sense they would go after people who no one would believe.
