What if the questions are asked not to make sure you know the information, but to make sure your read critically. I think plot questions are put there to train your mind to take more information in.

I do see your point, but I love English and I understand that analysing parts of the book and evaluating can help you in a few jobs where you have to write summaries after an event or something. I mean, analysing things, such as evidence, can help you become a good lawyer.
