-204 Saying "Thanks, but no thanks" is completely stupid and redundant. amirite?

What I mean is you're meaning to reject something while still appreciating the offer, and "No, thanks" does JUST THAT. Saying "Thanks, but no thanks" is literally like saying "No, but thanks, thanks" which is too many thanks. This saying has been annoying me ever since I moved to America.

Yeah.... no.

"No thanks" "I don't get any thanks? That's rude." "No, thanks." "Oh, that was nice. Even though mu offer was rejected, they still said thank you." Commas. Use them.

I know what commas are, and in this case you don't even need it because it's just such a phrase. It's said as "no thanks" as in zero thanks, without a pause or anything, and it's spelled without a comma EVERYWHERE. And that's not even the point of the post, what if it'd said "Saying 'Thanks, but no, thanks' is stupid and redundant"? Would you still vote no even if it's completely true?

I didn't even mean the post. I was just talking how when people don't use the phrase right, it annoys me. But since that's unrelated to the post, I guess I shouldn't have even commented. I'm sorry. My bad.

It sounds better than saying "Thank you but I would rather not have what it is that you are offering." That's it. Also it's always struck me as sort of sarcastic.

I agree completely. I've never used it in a context that wasn't incredibly sarcastic.

Neither have I. It's kinda bitchy. Haha

Yeah, just saying "No thanks" already implies that you are thanking the person, but you're not accepting their offer.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Right, saying 'Thanks, but no thanks' is like saying 'Yes please, if you please'.

I agree technically speaking, but no one really hears the thanks as a sincere thank you when someone say "no thanks". I guess it depends on how you say it though.
