+135 Girls should lift weights, too. You shouldn't worry about gaining muscle because you won't look bulky--not without steroids, anyways. You feel stronger and can do more than you ever could with just cardio, amirite?

Who says we don't?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know some girls do! But almost every teenage girl I've talked to is deathly scared of lifting--or they'll only lift the pink and purple 5lb dumbbells which don't do anything for you. Well, that and every women's fitness magazine ever discourages it or encourages using really light weights or doing 50 million reps of something that's not helping you at all...cause at that point it's cardio, not resistance training.

Exactly, I'm so tired of girls saying "I don't want to lift weights, I don't want to get all bulky." You will NOT get bulky unless you're Arnold Schwarznegger's illegitimate daughter or something.

dude i agree with you about the cardio thing cuz i love running but those 5lb weights dont do "nothing" for you, they can actually be better for your muscles because your muscles improve by getting tired and feeling the ache(or something) so benching/lifting a heavier weight will only get your muscles tired faster and therefore will probably quit, whereas with a 5lb weight you can do more reps and feel a constant ache in your muscle without feeling as if your arms will give out. so there is more of a benefit and your muscles will look more naturally lean like that, as opposed to looking to muscle-mass-y--gigantic-biceps because those ARE possible on girls

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzTWQCJX0-o Watch this. Her quads look a LITTLE bigger, right? But NOT "muscle-mass-y-gigantic" even though she's squatting 200LBS! Lemme tell you, girls WON'T look like body builders unless they take steroids. It depends on your overall level of fitness. Sometimes, over the course of a LONG workout, 5lb weights are what you need to do. When I FIRST STARTED doing my most recent arm workout, there were 2 exercises for which that worked for me...but I was still doing ONLY 16 reps with it.

For gaining bulk or muscle quickly, the ideal is to do 8-10 reps. Sometimes, you can do as little as 5 reps---you should see the workout plan 5x5 for beginners, cause it's a good way to build your fitness level really quickly. For gaining LEAN MUSCLE MASS--which is what most girls want--the ideal is still 12-15 (maybe 16) reps. If you do too many more than that, you're wasting time. You might be able to find the burn, but it'll take you way longer, and it's just a waste of your time when doing 12 reps with a heavier weight will have the same--or even a faster effect, with a higher gain in strength...and you're STILL not in danger of looking bulky.

My step mom can bench 160, so girls are capable of it. And if someone was worried about appearance, consider this: would you rather be strong or able to snap in half?

wtf...Mrs.hulk?

Don't worry, she doesn't get angry very easily :D

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Err. I took a weight-lifting class. Which is now exclusive for guys... which I thought was sexist, the same as my initial thought on this post.

I do.

I love feeling stronger, but I don't want to look weird. I know, that's what girls usually say, but ever since I started toning my legs by sprinting, they've become too bulky to wear dresses. But hey, at least I look alright in gym shorts.

My friend keeps saying she's fat but won't run because it "bulks her legs" what? how does that even. If anything, running should be the best for losing weight amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well if@1282359 (TalkingRice): Well that depends on the kind of running you do--what could be happening to her is that she's doing a lot of interval training (running REALLY FAST, and then walking for twice as long) which has a lot of results, but also builds/maintains muscle in the legs. So, if your body decides to burn fat at your stomach, while building muscle in your legs, your legs can look bulkier because you now have fat AND muscle. My advice to fix that if you're REALLY concerned about it would be to do more endurance focused cardio--lower impact for a LONGER time. It's less effective for your cardiovascular health, shows less immediate results, but will still burn calories and fat without building muscle. If you can WAIT for your body to adjust and start to burn fat in your legs, which may take a while, then it's better for you to do HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) because your cardiovascular health AND weight loss will be faster.

ooh not me...I'm a guy so i could care less. but you seem to really know your stuff hahas So running at maximum speed then walking is better than just jogging?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

lol i think your friend is just lazy

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Haha, well it depends on how you do it. It's best to do high intensity interval training. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/03/fashion/03Fitness.html You can read up on it there. They suggest to do 1-4 minutes of high intensity coupled with a resting period...but I've heard that you can go as low as 30 seconds. Usually what I do is 30 seconds of high intensity coupled with 2 minutes of rest after my warm up--so 30 seconds as hard and fast as I can, usually at higher incline to get my heart rate up to at LEAST 85% of my max if not more, and then take 2 minutes of cool down to get back down to 65% at the lowest. So...if you're out of shape, that equates to RUN FAST, then walk for 2 minutes. If you're in shape it can just be varying speeds of running, or run-jog alternating. There's tons of info online you can find. :)
