-73 Religion is pointless really. People always claim that it is a way for people to "gain morals," but let's be real here. It's as if people are saying that without the bible, torah, or qur'an people wouldn't know not to kill, steal, or commit adultery. Religion is a crutch and allows people to twist and confuse information and use the excuse that it's in the name of "god.", amirite?

I guess it could be considered pointless, but it give guidelines that assist some people in living their lives. This could mean doing good things, like starting a charity and taking in orphaned kids, or bad things, like killing people in the name of God. Everything has negative statistics, and we just have to deal with it. I'm an atheist, but each to their own :)

Right, but what i'm saying is, is that good things like charity or helping the less fortunate are still possible without religion. I just think that even with all the good things religion is capable of, it has caused a lot more unnecessary harm than good. But don't worry, just like im an atheist/non-religionist, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Me shoving my beliefs down your throat isn't any better than some wild christian

You make that argument that good things are possible without religion, but so are bad things. Just as I could donate money to orphans with no correlation to religion, I could also shoot someone. I am an atheist, and perfectly capable of doing both good and bad.

Saying that religion is a way for people to gain morals is not anything like saying that there is no way for people to develop morals without religion. Religious philosophies are distorted and can be used to justify wars and slaughter, but then again, political philosophies do the same thing. For example, trying to spread Christianity through the Crusades is just as stupid as trying to spread democracy through the Vietnam war. Wars aren't really caused by religion, they're caused by stupidity. Religion does have great value as a moral guide and as a medium of spiritual enlightenment. Additionally, religious rituals and scriptures bring joy and comfort to many and religion inspires many good works.

Actually the Crusade was even more stupid than the Vietnam war because the bible clearly says "Thou shalt not kill."

Religion advocates some pretty immoral behavior. It's only a moral guide if you cherry pick what you believe to be ethical.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Name ONE thing that the bible tells us to do that is immoral (spoken by Jesus or Moses or someone good).

Do good things because it's the right thing to do. Do not do it because you are forced to do it because your religion dictates you do it.

Honestly I kind of agree kind of don't agree with the post, but OP took it a little far in the comments.. Everyone has their own opinion on this topic. Some of us respect the opinions of others, and some are the OP..

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i really don't know how to vote here. i think that in the case of some people, everything OP says is true. but in other cases, especially those like MLK as brought up in other comments, religion has been a great deal of help. i doubt anyone will ever be able to really say that it has caused more harm than good or vice versa.

Religion didn't cause any bad things to happen. Stupid people who pretended to be religious in order to control people is what caused the KKK, the holocaust, the crusades, the 9/11, the situation in Afghanistan, the dark ages, etc. You can't attribute hatred and murder to a religion that tells us to love everyone and specifically says not to kill.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

what is this i don't even... i'm pretty sure that those behind 9/11 and the crusades believed very strongly in what they were doing. besides, not all religion says that you should love everyone. extremist and fundamentalist sects often take far more militant views than do the majority of a religion's followers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not really religious, but OPs spouting his views just like bad religious people. OP should mind his/her own business and ignore anyone who does do the accused. Religion is a crutch to some, though, I must admit. Religion itself is not pointless and serves purpose to answering "the big questions" for people who are afraid or maybe just want some hope for whatever reason.

Meow? I needed some comic relief.

Hello, OP here, I'm not sure how to prove that to you but I promise its me. Anyway I just wanted to apologize for insulting anyone. I happen to be a very rational, open-minded person, and it just may not seem that way because I come off strong during debates. Next time I'll try to sound less like a tyrant and more like myself. Once again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

Hungry trolls are so annoying, sometimes you just have to feed them in the hopes that it will shut them up.
