Haha, I'm not sure if I understood this post right, but this reminds me of one friend of mine who likes to be obnoxious and unsympathetic by default, but he's actually extraordinarily helpful when his friends need help with...well, anything. But he also had this equally annoying friend one who liked to egg him on and always asked if the two were friends. And my friend's basic response to that was always, "Okay, yes, I like you and you're my friend. Just don't make me say it!"
