+86 The death penalty is a good concept and should stick around instead of waste taxpayers money to feed convicted murderers, amirite?

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

Unfortuantely the death penalty in places like California have a very long death row. So we end up paying for the criminals to stay in prison for almost their whole entire life and then pay additional to put them to death

amen! i'm sick this socialist nation making me pay for a convicted rapist/murderer's food, bed, and television! let god judge them. did you know that they even waste our resources by sterilizing the needle for the lethal injection?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

you do realize it actually costs more money for the death penalty than 30 years in jail, right? with all the appeals, extra visitation, last wishes that need to be granted, sterilization, overseeing personel, the actual execution of the lethal method, and cleanup...death penalty costs end up a ton more than the cost of bad food and local television for 30 years. (i'd suggest research before post)

by Anonymous 14 years ago

well then here's an idea: take away the visitation, last wishes, and sterilization. let's go further: take away the tv in general, the gym equipment, the library, and the bed.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

let's promote not killing people by killing people! ...god damn hypocrites

by Anonymous 14 years ago

so instead, let's promote freedom by forcing people to pay for the pampered life of a felon?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Pampered?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

kevinmat: "let god judge them." by killing them, you're not giving them a chance to repent during their life. life ends when god chooses for it to end, not when you choose that someone else should die. as sandboxczar says, the lethal injection and all things associated with it cost more than taking care of a person for 30 years. and as for your idea to take away the things they have a RIGHT to as a citizen (the visitation, last wishes, and sterilization of the needle), well that's just downright unconstitutional, and "socialist". fuck you very much.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

are you missing the whole aspect of the irony on the sterilization of the needle? how are they going to become infected if they're dead...?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

So you'd rather have a human being put to death than lose some money?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

It takes a real idiot to wish someone dead. Have you no soul? "The pampered life of a felon?" WHAT THE HELL!?!?! THEY ARE ****ING HUMAN BEINGS! ...****ing idiots...

by Anonymous 14 years ago

They lose their humanity when they willingly slaughter another.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

@ Anon, there are four letters before the 'ing' in the word 'Fucking' @Annabelle If that is the case then the people who order the death penalty also deserve death, as does everyone who supports it. You can't say that a murderer deserves to be murdered and still consider yourself a better person than them, what if the people they killed deserved it too? If someone murders another murderer do they deserve to die for it?

Death row prisoners are not immediately put to death after sentencing. They are normally in prison ten to fifteen years during all the appeals. There's the extra cost of state lawyers for those appeals. Also, the cost of guards who watch the prisoner for suicide. It's a bit ironic, actually. the prisoner isn't allowed to kill themself and save the prison some money. If they fail to kill the prisoner the first time, the state gets him all healed up and tries again. So let's kill some people to prove that killing people is bad, eh?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

actually, in my crime class, we learned that it's actually a lot more expensive to have someone on death row than to just keep them in prison because they are entitled to several appeals and that costs a lot of money. its cheaper without the death penalty.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Sadly this is extremely False. The Death Penalty costs literally 4 times as much to the tax payers as a life sentence would. I'm afraid you have your numbers very far off. The Appeal process in courts constitutes somewhere around 2 million dollars per individual, where in cases of life sentences there is minimal appeal rates. Know some facts about a highly debated topic before you speak my friend. Oh and you should also know, How does teaching young children that killing a killer is just? Is that the same 'eye for an eye' theory that would justify raping the rapist, bashing the assaulter, or stealing from the thief. That is not a positive society, more of one raised on brutality and violence.

It's not too late to bring back the good old-fashioned gaols and have ourselves some fun with a hangman's knot. Muuuch cheaper and we can get so many done in a day. I volunteer to be the hangwoman. Or we can go way back... anyone interesting in the revival of crucifixions? I'd be happy to supervise.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

regardless of which is more expensive, i was misinformed and i do apologize for that. but i still feel that life-sentence prisoners are treated better than they deserve. "WHAT THE HELL!?!?! THEY ARE ****ING HUMAN BEINGS! ...****ing idiots..." you see, in my eyes, the grown man that decides to rape and mutilate a little girl... is not a human being. he is a monster. for me, it's about two things in this order: money and what he "deserves." even if it is cheaper for him to receive a life sentence rather than the death penalty. no one can seem to tell me why he deserves a television. why does he deserve a library? why does he even deserve a bed to sleep in? why do people who have life sentences receive heart transplants and possibly take (another) life from someone else? these are just my feelings. and yet, still, no one can tell me why a criminal being put to death deserves a sterilized needle for his lethal injection.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

it's not that someone deserves or doesn't deserve a sterilized needle, it's just standard medical procedure when handling needles. correct me if i'm wrong, but most needles these days come sterilized. it's not like they reuse the same needle for every lethal injection and re-sterilize it. also, sterilization prevents infection for the person handling the needle and the person administering the lethal injection.

Just as rights are given they should be taken away from those who went against them such as those on death row. They should not be given any rights and while more expensive serve out the deserved punishment.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And what about when the innocent get killed and they find out too late that they've executed the wrong man? Or what if the criminal is mentally retarded (IQ below 70) or mentally ill? Death penalty causes more problems than it solves.
