+383 The first person to hear the phrase "Break a leg" must have been like, "Well thank y--WHAT? Go break your own leg you double crossing pessimistic bastard." amirite?

i always thought i mustve been to a guy who had to break his leg on stage as part of the play so that was just a way of saying good luck and then it became an inside joke

It was considered bad luck to say good luck. "So, if one says "good luck" by accident or by choice there is only one antidote. The perpetrator must go outside, spin around three times, and spit over his left shoulder. Then, and only then, will the cast allow him back into the theater."
