+170 A good way to increase teacher pay would be to have all people making ridiculous amounts of money in the sports/entertainment industry to give up a chunk of their salary and give it to the schools in their state. This way, we could pay teachers what they deserve, and have smarter students capable of conducting the jobs that we'll need for the future, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well idk about all of them... since most people who care about the issue are in the education industry. But I'm sure if the idea is proposed, you would get some athletes and movie stars to donate. Producers and directors need the money to make movies and TV shows, though.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know. But I think we should put the education of the kids first. Entertainment should be the last thing we are worried about when this generation is becoming increasingly ignorant.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I strongly disagree about the ignorance thing. It's just that no one is proud of the generation that comes after them, when it's just different. The majority of teenagers do not watch or listen to mainstream, but there are A FEW shows and musicians that rise to the top (mainstream). the majority is A LOT of scattered shows, since the majority goes into sub-categories of tastes. Basically, what I'm saying is most of this generation is against this generation. They're people like you who hate mainstream. I can rationalize by that point, but I also see the fun in listening to music for entertainment and not needing a deep message behind it. And I like Transformers even though there's "no story" because it's entertaining imo.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I wasn't talking about music wise, or movie wise. I'm talking about how those in the US don't know about much as a whole. Everything is dumbed down for us.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think a lot of teens go out of their way to learn stuff they're interested in on the internet (like I'm really interested in other cultures, and now I can identify almost any country if you point to it on a globe). But yeah, school should teach us more.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The problem is though, with entertainment that teaches kids just about nothing, there is very little interest for learning on comparison to this thoughtless fun. If people don't care about what they need to learn then they aren't going to put much effort into learning it unless they know they will literally die without it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, a lot of teens like to be all smart and "deep" about stuff that doesn't matter, and they need to learn about stuff that'll ultimately benefit their future career and help them make good decisions throughout their lives.

I'm one of "those in the US". And yeah some of the people here give us a terrible reputation (i.e. Jersey Shore) but it's not that bad , yeah I wanna move somewhere wonderful, when I'm old enough but it's not terrible. I can give a list of places worse off.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Even though we don't look bad, we are. We rank pretty low in the education system.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I live in the US too. You seem to be making an assumption that could have easily been corrected by looking at my About Me for half a second.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sorry I meant to reply to "ThisIsWhyImRite" D:

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh. That's okay then.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ah no, I live in Texas.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Unless it's the 1800's Texas is most definately one of the 50 states within the USA and you're one of the reasons other countries stereotype Americans by how you're talking.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I wasn't saying I don't live in the US. Jesus. I was stating that your explanation of Jersey and the US wasn't needed because I live in the US. Chill.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I do too

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why should sports/entertainment industry have to give up their money? They did hard work and took chances. They succeeded. The money they get is deserved.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Teachers deserve it more.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No they don't. They need it more, but don't deserve it. We live in a capitalist place.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They teach the future of America. They deserve it more. What do athletes do? Use the money for drugs and drinking and parties while some teacher cant even fucking pay bills and it reflects on our education system.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well then why don't we just raise the taxes and get more money to give to teachers? Because we don't want to give away money. Neither do athletes/entertainers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Thats also a good Idea but only if the Wealthier pays the same if not more then the lower classes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Basically, we should just increase taxes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, Charlie Sheen totally DESERVES the $2m odd he was earning per episode. Teachers actually contribute to the future of society. Sports/entertainment stars don't.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I see where you're coming from, it's just if the star is making 25 million a year... I'm pretty sure donating a couple million won't bankrupt him.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Or how about having competent teachers to begin with? Throwing money at the issue won't solve much if faculty sucks and students remain apathetic.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

True, but increasing teacher pay might attract the more competent people. Why would people capable of making six figures as a doctor, lawyer, etc. want to settle for making five as a teacher?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

California has enough school funding, thank you!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The whole world doesn't live in California.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A majority of the famous world does...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Possibly. What does that have to do with anything though?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"...all people making ridiculous amounts of money in the sports/entertainment industry..." A major chunk of the entertainment industry is set in California, and California already has many schools that are seemingly well-funded and stuffs...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, that would be a problem. Some states would have more funding than others, but that's how it's always been.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Shouldn't funding be directly proportional to the level of disrepair a school is in?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That would be ideal. In this case, I guess you could have all of the people in the entertainment industry pool their money together, and then the government can assess each school to see which ones need it most and take care of it accordingly. But usually, funding just depends on how many taxpayers there are in your town. Even though my idea seems sort of socialist, I feel like this small amount of socialism would be good for the school system at least.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Socialism: a necessary evil.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think we need socialism. Or a better Capitalist system. Dont say socialist as if its a bad thing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

first step towards communism. i have no good/bad opinion on this; just pointing something out.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, I thought about that after I posted, and figured I'd get some sort of heat for it. But most people agree that teachers should be paid more, but no one wants to give up any of their money for it. If you were to raise taxes enough to allow the teachers to be paid adequately, no one would like that either.
