That may have actually made for a good plot twist late in the series. Tom's body destroyed, he's good and dead. But wait, that thing they thought was a horcrux they destroyed? Just a decoy enchanted to give off the same magic show as a regular horcrux. There's still at least one left! Of course, that would kinda screw with a few other things JK set up, but still. It's an intriguing idea.
