-35 Since some children are better informed about life than a lot of adults, yet get few rights on the basis of their age alone, there should be a world-wisdom test you can take as a child to gain legal adult status, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If not why not? Ageism is just as discriminatory as racism, sexism etc.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well most of the rights of adults are for physical reasons, aka drinking laws or driving. the ones that aren't can actually be obtained, its called independent child status or something.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Emancipation.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, its not as discriminatory as racism or sexism because eventually (most) kids will be adults, however you cant change races, and (most) people dont change their gender

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Most people think they know more than they do, and I can say now that what I thought I knew as a teenager was complete bullshit. Even now I'm learning every day. Now if a 15 year old can pass a financial exam and exams about jobs and housing situations then I could see an exception but you usually don't learn any of those things until you're older nor do you know the experience.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

'ususally' is not the point. The point is the rights of any human being that is capable of independent thought.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't get what you're saying then, everybody has the same rights minus the age limit on cigs, alcohol, lottery, voting, most jobs and joining the military. In fact children get it easier when it comes to crimes because they don't go to jail. And none of the things mentioned that you can't do are based entirely on age, there's a lot of different reasons involved, (Health reasons, child labor laws, and guardian laws). What rights are you specifically talking about?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Freedom from the will of a guardian (which inhibits right to free speech and protest)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There's emancipation but everybody has freedom of speech, though it's not against the law to ground kids based on disagreeing views. I thought you were talking about other things when you mentioned this post, so it was a little confusing at first lol.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well all other things are governed by that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah. It's called emancipation. It can already be done, it's just a long process and you need legitimate reasons.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So why is it not common knowledge? *Totally makes this amirite obsolete*

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are a lot of things that aren't common knowledge. And I don't know. Maybe emancipation just isn't talked about much. Do you really want to be independent as a 15 year old? Not many are, and even if they are, most of the time a minor is emancipated because of family problems and the like.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's in extreme cases mainly, like abuse and whatnot. But if you can prove your parents are detrimental to your life you can emancipate. It's hard because then you are on your own, and it's hard to get a job when you're young so most kids don't do it, even if they have the resources.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It is.

Maybe they could do it for the right to vote...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This is a wonderful idea!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ageism isn't a bad thing, we all have to live through it, unlike sexism or racism.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You're basically saying that the older generation has the right to be cruel to the younger generation just because they were once on the receiving end. That's not fairness, that's revenge on a totally different person.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

who says they are being treated unfairly or wrongly. Being a kid is one of the best time in most peoples lives. people restrict us because we don't know enough to make proper decisions.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sure but you're describing immaturity, not being aged under 18.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

but you can't learn to be mature enough in such a short period of time. Kids may seem mature in some areas but no child is really mature enough in every area of there life, some adults aren't even mature.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What a vast generalization. My entire point is that although age is proportional to maturity, it does not indicate it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

age shows the range in which people are capable of being mature, a five year old may be mature for its age but at the end of the day it isn't mature when compared to a 20 year old.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sure, so try on a smaller level then, with say 16 year olds +

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Making young children "adults" would jeopardize their safety and harm them psychologically.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

1. At what point did I say young children? 2. At what point did I say this should be mandatory?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Teenagers are idiots, 'nuff said.
